New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
My S9 is whistling. Doesn't seem to be related to the humidifier as I've tried it with and without and it whistles either way. Doesn't seem to be the hose. Doesn't seem to be the mask as I tried both my FX and LT and it still continues. It did not do this at the dme's. I am expecting too much? Someone said on the board the S9s are "silent"
so that was what I hoped for. The dme when he was putting the machine in the case didn't realize the black box would drop out of the bottom and it did and hit the carpet but I don't think hard enough to hurt anything. What is that black box anyway and would it make things whistle if damaged??? Any suggestions????
I think the two sections (autopap and humidifier) are clicked together securely. It's on a level sturdy table. What's the deal??? Thanks, Terry

if you turn the machine on, you should not be able to hear anything coming from the unit itself.
its silent running..
if the noise is coming from the unit, that is not typical..

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
Does anyone else have a totaly silent machine? I'm thinking I may need to call the dme on Monday re same. BTW Since the hose doesn't hook directly to the plastic humidifier hole, but to the metal case, is something supposed to connect the two? This is only the second S9 auto the therapist sold so I'm wondering if something is missing or causing the whistle simply because its not hooked up correctly? Anyone have a problem w/the humidifier getting yucky since it doesn't come apart? T

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
Some of us do hear a whistle from the S9 on exhale. It's been described as a "chirp" or "whistle." I only hear it when I'm sitting up, and it doesn't bother me at all. You may be interested in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49987. There's a link in the first post to a recording of the sound!
You asked what the "black box" is. I assume you're talking about the rectangular brick that supplies power to the machine.
As for the humidifier, I have never had anything yucky growing in mine. I use only distilled water that I make myself, using a water purifier that I purchased at Sears some years ago. Some people empty their humidifier tank daily. I just top mine off every morning and empty it every week or two. I've been doing this for a year (with three different humidifiers), and no problems so far.
There is an H5i humidifier chamber that can be disassembled for cleaning too: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... amber.html. They say it's dishwasher safe.

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
My S8 AutoSet II just started exhibiting a soft whistling sound on exhale. This unit is a few months old, its a warranty replacement for the one I had for over a year. Never noticed the sound before, but it's not loud enough to be disturbing unless I purposefully listen for it.

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
I have never heard any whistling from my unit, it is basically silent. You can hear a very very slight air/wind noise, but never any whistling and it is located on nightstand approx. 18" from ear. I do have selective hearing but so far only use it on my wife. If the unit itself was dropped at dme, I would be sure to get a new one at their expense. I would be very concerned about damage to it. The motor is very sensitive and there are computer components inside that probably won't accept too much impact without damage. If you need warranty work on it at a later date and resmed finds internal impact damage, you will have a tough time getting it repaired for free. They will do a thorough autopsy to see if any design changes are needed in future generations. I hope the brick (power supply) was what was dropped, that would not concern me very much at all.
With finesse, you can remove top of the standard humidifier tank, clean and reassemble. With my fingernails, I pulled the rim of the top outward all the way around at the seam on the side, lifting gently as I worked my way around. Just be careful. If it gets cracked/broke, use aquarium grade rtv silicone to repair, just let it cure for a few days before use. Like dream on said, use distilled water and it should be ok for several months with just rinsing. Happy pappin! jlk

Sometimes I will hear a "chirp" on exhale if the pressure is above 10 but it is hardly noticeable.

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
I do have very sensitive ears....seem to pick up sounds easily so maybe its "me" and expectations that are not realistic. There is the "chirp" upon exhale and also I can hear the "wind." For those who are sensitive to sound out there, does there seem to be a difference for you if you use the ramp? (I didn't last night...went right to my cpap setting of 9). Is there a differnce in sound for you if you use the easier exhale function...if yes have you noticed which settings are the quietest?
Another topic....I used the FX large nasal pillows the first night and got an ahi of 0.6. My second night, as an experiment, I used the FX medium pillows and got an ahi of 2.5. Is the first number apneas and the second hypops? I'm thinking, even if the "happy face" was on for a good fit/not leaky face for both sizes, if my ahi was less w/the larger pillows it may have had something to do w/that. Also, if I yawn, purposely take a deeper breath (just to see how it sounded and felt) does that effect the ahi?
I've noticed at this higher pressure setting when I swallow my ears react (kind of like a "poof block") Can this effect your ears eventually or is it ok and a normal part of therapy at higher pressure settings?
BTW the machine itself and the humidifier wasn't dropped in my presence. It was the black power supply box that was dropped. I can't see any problem on the outside. Is it normal for it to get warm? It did last night.
Re the humidifier and cleaning: My $3,000 deductible kicks in again in January so I'm hoping I can keep this one clean enough w/out having to replace it in a few months.
Wondering if, since I was diagnosed w/cll (chronic leukemia) and had a lung mass in the past, if there is one that comes designed to take apart and clean and dry to prevent mold from going, if my doc writes a script for it if ins would pay for it this yr. Anyone there have one that opens for cleaning? Is it easy to open? Since chemo the nerves in my hand effected my hand strength and I couldn't open the old remstar auto humidifier anymore to clean it well. This morning when I emptied my humidifier I gave it a shot of straight white vinegar and a swish of that, followed by a bit of dawn odor eraser dish soap w/ro water and a good rinse. Do you put your water container back in the machine with the lid closed even when not in use or do you leave the lid of the humdifier case open so it has a chance to dry out w/out the chamber inside? Thanks for being so helpful!

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
My S9 has no whistle, but I have tinnitus and there is always a whistle about The chamber is easy to take apart and clean, 4 tabs snap out and you have 3 loose pieces. Typically the metal pan is the only thing I wash/rinse out and air dry while apart. I would not hesitate to buy this out of pocket if it involved my own health. (I did) $37.00 plus shipping is not a large amount in the grand scheme of things. If you have any doubts google Montana State University and biofilms. They have a slide show that should remove any doubts you have about being able to clean the humidifier given your other health concerns.
Good luck

Only when I use the Activa mask, and only with initial exhalations and only when first lying down, is there a faint brief "whistle" from the S9. Within a minute, as respirations are reduced in force, this ceases.

My S9 Autoset is whistling if i activate EPR. If i use my S9 with the Humidifier i notice the Darth Vader Sound.
Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
I just talked to a rep on cpaptalk. She said I should check to be sure the machine and the humidifier is clicked together properly....If its not just right the whistle can happen according to her. I'll try and see how that works! Hope its that simple a fix! Terry

Re: New S9 auto has a low whistle...is this normal?
I also have very sensitive ears and I do hear the slight whistling noise when exhaling. So slight that it can be ignored. The breathing sound from both the mask vents and the machine is louder than that, IMO.
S9 is not totally silent, if you start listening to it in the night time silence. I suspect if any kind of machine with a fan can be so.
