how loud is Swift FX?

Post by Astrophytum » Sun Oct 03, 2010 1:49 am

Hi forum,

I would like to buy a Swift FX. But, how loud is this mask? Or better, how loud is the permanent noise from the Respiratory valve?

Now I have a mask from Weinmann, the NP15. This mask is abolute quiet, you are listen absolutly noting, when stop breathing for a moment.

Regards,
Astrophytum

I am trying a Swift FX right now to teach myself not to mouth breath, and I must say out of all I have tried (Quattro, ComfortFusion, Comfortgel, Foma, Mirage liberty) it is the quietest and most comfortable. I woke up with it to take care of the baby and forgot that I even had it on. My main is still the liberty due to mouth breathing, but I will be happy when I can lick that and can go FX all the time.

The mask is extremity quiet, but if the air blast hits bedding etc it can be noisy.
Fitting an air diffuser will solve this problem.

greg-g,

can you let me know where to find or how to rig up an air diffuser for the FX? The noise from the exhaust hitting my blankets, pillows, etc. is the one and only thing I dislike about this mask.

thanks,
robysue

In truth there is a bit of that "Darth Vader" sound to masks that have their own short hoses--particularly if you are using EPR/Flex settings. The noise is conducted in the short hose. If that short hose is resting on your pillow, the pillow may magnify the sound, too. The sound is mostly on inspiration on my machine--if you hold your breath it is silent.

It's not loud, and it can be dampened by putting a cover on the short hose as well. It is also easily masked by "white" noise like a fan in the room, a sound machine, or an MP3 player.

I'm getting to the point now that I'm so acclimated to the sound that I can't hear it much even when I try.

The quietest mask I ever used was the Mirage Micro, but that tore up my nose and I could not use it for long.

I'm deaf so I never hear mine at all so I wonder about any sounds either from the mask or the machine. Sooooo no problems for me. Huggies, Fay

For some reason when I had it on trial, my nose whistled on exhalation. So much so that it was my main reason for not choosing it.

The only time my nose whistled in the FX is when it was "nuffy". I get out the saline spray and blow my nose when that happens.

I've been using the FX since day one. I don't have anything else to compare it to, but to me it is quiet. Keep in mind that "quiet" is relative from person to room to building and location. As others have mentioned, the only noticeable noise is when the vent blast hits something close like bedding or pillow.

That being said, I have tried on many other models, and just cannot see myself using anything larger or more invasive than the FX. I also have the fit dialed in for very low leakage, and I am a wild sleeper.
