S9 CPAP vs. S9 APAP for me?

At the very least get the S9 Elite, not the S9 Escape. The Elite has full data capability; the Escape does not.

My 2 cents here: Auto can work in cpap mode too, but it may be that the original Rx said cpap and you might need a new Rx for an auto....depends on your insurance. Yes, they use the same codes, but some insurance will only give an auto out with a specific Rx from the doc and and also require that it meet the 'medically necessary' criteria they have set for it to be approved. The price difference between an S9 cpap and auto is about $50, I believe, on our host site.

and as everyone said you can run it in cpap mode too.. you wont know if you do better with an autoset, or cpap if you only end up
with a cpap.. I experimented and ran mine on cpap, and I couldnt handle it, so glad I had the option of going back to
auto..
Also, some of us lean toward positional apnea.. I do, mine is way worse on my back, so I need more pressure if I end up on my back,
and not much at all on my tummy.. so I wouldnt want to be stuck with the high pressure that stops my back apneas all night long, that
just seems like a waste and unneeded discomfort to me.

you can see the nightly averages right on the screen with the s9 autoset up till noon, then it clears for the next period..

also has a masking fitting feature, and custom choices for masks and tubing, oh tubing, its fall, winter is coming, you can buy a climate
line hose to go with that s nine which will provide a lot of comfort..also slim line hosing which is less bulky...

It has an expiration relief feature too, which makes it easier to exhale.. I love that..
ITS NOT noisy, you cant hear it.. many people check to see if its REALLY turned on..



Also I cant believe how simple it is to take the sd card and stick it in your computer to download your information if you have a curious night..

I can't see where anybody's mentioned it yet, but another one to AVOID is the "Escape Auto". That's worthless on steroids.

I called (it's before my appointment today, on West coast time) and asked if they have the S9 APAP, they said they do (and seemed to imply I will be able to get it).

So I am reading up on these types of the S9 to NOT get.....

I am thinking Auto will be best for me, considering I still have daytime fatigue that's severe.....and I don't want to have to fool around with trying a million things to see what pressure will work for me, then have that change because of congestion, changing position, etc.

I do normally end up on my back at night. Is that even okay? Like is that to be avoided, or if my machine can adjust to that, is it fine? I am leaning towards, it's fine if your machine can adjust to it.

Just make sure it's the "S9 Autoset". (make sure they SHOW it to you before you sign anything or walk out with it)

If you have a prescribed pressure, I would STRONGLY advise trying that first for several weeks to see whether they did or did not get it right. (there are reasons they do titrations)

Normally, sleeping in the supine position (back) is the worst for apneas. It's generally recommended that a person sleep on their sides whenever possible. (There are exceptions to almost everything)

BTW, the concept of the Escape Auto (an Auto without efficacy data) makes about as much sense as a car with an opaque windshield. It has to be ResMed's response to DME requests for a cheaper Auto. From the doctor's or patient's viewpoint, it makes no sense at all. Especially when you consider that the machine has to be measuring that data to make its pressure adjustments. It just doesn't save it.

You should not hear any noise from the data being recorded. My S-9 Auto is not quiet, it is silent. You should insist on the auto and nothing else. It is a very nice unit and you can download and view your data with the resscan 3.11 software. Go to a different dme if need be. You shouldn't have to pay any difference for a data capable machine vs an entry level one. Call your insurance and see if the dme provider is being above board. I have seen at least 3 different dme's I deal with doing what I would consider dishonest dealings. I think many people have seen such also. Good Luck jlk

my pre-therapy AHI was not severe by any means (though my symptoms are, considering I am disabled by fatigue).

That just shows you how utterly useless AHI is as a diagnostic criterion. Sadly, that is the only thing insurance companies care about and thus is what doctors use for diagnosis.

For the life of me I cannot understand what use an Escape Auto would be. Even to the doctor/DME, how is this of any use? Shall we shoot bats in the dark now, or what?

So here is the update.....

Went to the DME, and left with the S9 Autoset! Yay! I made sure it was the exact one I wanted before signing anything. Thank you for the pep talk. Just DRIVING anywhere is hard with how drowsy I am (in an urban area, lots of lanes), so I definitely needed a pep talk, going in there alone (and I loaded up on coffee). They didn't give me a hard time about getting an APAP at all, though.....but they did charge me $295. Maybe I could have fought that....but I figured it's better than buying the machine outright, and other than that, didn't want to fight it. I paid nothing for my last machine at all, no monthly rental fee....free tubing, free everything (the insurance hadn't caught up with the paperwork yet), so I figured what they were charging was fair, considering I also got a new mask! The Swift FX is even better for me than the LT.

So it looks like it was a successful day. Now let's hope this new machine helps! Thank you again.
