No dreaming

Before CPAP I used to have the most incredible dreams. The dreams had complex multi-level plots, colorful characters, and outrageous settings. They were so entertaining that I used to write them down upon waking. I started CPAP therapy last October and have hardly dreamed at all. My conclusion is that dreams occur while in REM sleep and with the CPAP I am in deeper sleep longer. I am pretty sure this is true because on occasion I have gotten up to go to the bathroom and returned to bed to fall asleep for about an hour without the mask. I have had some dreams during that mask free period.

There's a big difference between hardly dreaming at all and actually dreaming a lot but not being aware of it.

I'd venture a bet that if you were hooked up to an EEG (as you were in a PSG sleep study) while sleeping with your CPAP, the data would show you're having normal REM cycles but are sleeping so well that you're simply not waking during your dreams. Not having your REM disturbed...sleeping right through it...not waking up long enough to be aware of having a dream.

Waking up in the morning and not being aware of having dreamed doesn't mean a person did not have plenty of REM that night, and plenty of dreams.
