Broke my compliance by pulling an all nighter

Post by PJ the DJ » Tue Sep 07, 2010 8:39 am

I'm a journalist, and as we all know, the news never sleeps. So combine a breaking news story along with a holiday weekend and impending deadline and well... I never went to bed last night. Intended to get a few hours of shuteye but it was morning before I knew it.

My doctor will not be happy to see nothing on my card for last night, but this happens on occasion because of the nature of my job. My point, and yes I really do have one... is I weathered this all nighter pretty darn well. Not even very tired now. Still going strong. I credit this to the fact that I am better rested because of the sleep I got previously on CPAP. I've been waiting to see some changes since Pre-CPAP and voila, here is a change - a big one - more stamina!

I may have broken my compliance record, but I did learn something.

I haven't pulled a true all-nighter since starting CPAP, but I've had less than four hours sleep about a dozen times, affecting my compliance. In my case, I spend much of my time writing reports for people six time zones ahead of me. They arrive at their desks at my 3:00 a.m., so the temptation is to procrastinate and revise until then. CPAP has been an enabler. I agree that it makes it easier to reduce sleeping hours and get away with it, although I'm sure it's not good for me.

If you didn't sleep, you didn't break compliance. I recently had a day that started at 5:30am and because of vehicle breakdown did not end till I got home at 5am. I could not have done this how I was before CPAP. I slept 4 hours and got up to check on my mother and stayed up until bedtime that night. I consider myself 100% compliant for twenty months now. Every time I sleep or nap I use my machine.

Non Compliance is sleeping without CPAP

so no failure there. Compliance is using CPAP every time you sleep for at least 5 hours according to the reports from my machine.

PD, I have a client who is about to launch a first-of-its-kind CPAP cleaning system. We are looking for journalists in New England who might consider giving the system a try and review it.

Please contact me offline at chris at cooksonstephens dot com to discuss.

Thank you,

My only knowledge of compliance is that when you first get the machine, you must use it for at least 4 hours a night, for 30 straight nights out of 90, or your insurance company won't pick up the tab.

Is there more to it than that?

Compliance is all about $$ more than your therapy. Nobody gets paid without it. I don't know about the 90 days. My DME asked for my card at the 6 month mark and said the insurance wanted compliance data. But that was for a 10 month rent to own. Last payment made in October, my S9 is mine!
