Anyone use Patanase?

Post by SleepingUgly » Mon Sep 06, 2010 8:48 pm

Anyone use Patanase antihistamine spray? If so, did you compare it to Astepro? My nose is still running with Astepro. My doctor's opinion of Patanase's efficacy was quite low, so I'm wondering if people have any luck with it.

I was given samples of both Astepro and Pantanase to try by my allergist. I use Astepro as it seems to work well. I hate the aftertaste of Astepro, but I deal with it. Pantanase didn't seem to have that taste, but it didn't seem to work as well as Astepro. How many times a day are you using the Astepro? I only use it once a day, but I can use it up to twice a day as needed. My serious allergy season will begin around January in FL and run until April. I have a constant post nasal drip that nothing seems to alleviate, but the Astepro really helped with the allergy symptoms, otherwise. I am finding that the cpap therapy is helping a bit with my pnd.... I think it has to do with breathing filtered air overnight -- since bedrooms are notorious for having dust mites ....which I am allergic to.

Right now I'm using the Astepro 2 sprays each nostril, twice a day, and yet my nose still runs and runs... I am not sure WHY, as supposedly I am only allergic to dust mites, so I don't have seasonal allergies. Maybe it's just eliminating the nasal steroid, which I'm starting to think I really need... And yet, my cartilage is thinned, so it's not a good idea.

My ENT told me that the steroidal sprays are really the best solution to allergies, but I have a hard time using them for any length of time. My nose gets so dried out it bleeds, but my sinuses still weren't much improved and still caused me congestion. I got so tired of the bleeding and went to the allergist to see if I could use shots. I really only came up positive for dust, dust mites, and mold so they wanted me to try these newer sprays with a basic OTC Claritin and it has helped, but I still have the pnd. Grrrrrr. I know I have some seasonal allergies, too, because as soon as we hit pollen season from Jan - April in my part of FL, I go nuts. They can't test you for every plant, tree, and grass.... and I know I have a reaction when the Juniper pollen is high. I live in a heavily wooded area with lots of tropical foilage so I go full on allergic when our spring begins. I will use the Astepro twice a day when that happens and see what it does for me.

I hope you can find some relief soon!!

Emilia, do you use Claritin or Claritin-D? If the latter, is it the 24- or 12-hour version?

I use the basic OTC Claritin....not D. I usually buy a generic version to save money.

Oh, wait, I'm confused. My doctor said Claritin doesn't work well. I just took my first Allegra-D, 24-hour (it's by Rx only).

Your doctor says it doesn't work well? It has been around for years and years and is very popular. I've been on a number of the Rx brands...although I never tried Allegra, and I didn't find them to be much better than Claritin for me. Just spent a lot more money, that's all....

No, I don't use Patanase, but I do use Patanol/Pataday and love it. That's too bad if the nasal spray doesn't work as well as the eye drops.

Allergy shots help me a lot. Mold, ragweed, tree pollen, dustmites and roaches. (Why is my allergist giving shots but yours won't?)

OTC generic Zyrtec also helps. The consensus is that Zyrtec is stronger than Allegra or Claritin. Those two seem to work differently for different people.

For post nasal drip you can try children's Benedryl-type antihistamine at one fourth of the adult dosage. Liquids can be taken at smaller doses. I have had success with small doses during the day - no drip and no sleepiness.

I use patanase and only patanase. The astepro was giving my throat all kind of problems. Anything with steriods I stay far away from since I have had major bad reactions in the past. I also take 10 mg of singulair for allergies/asthma every day. I can't do allergy shots since my body and immune system are too sensitive. I am stuck in the proverbial rock and hardplace. I am moving my family back to florida where it appears the humidity and my immunity to florida allergens will give me a fighting chance to string a few good nights of sleep together. Side note, you gotta love when you can't even drive to a dentist appointment because you are to scared to drive when you have a bad night of sleep.

I'm not sure how reliable skin tests are, overall. By symptoms, I clearly have seasonal allergies, yet on skin tests, I had a positive reaction only to house dust. How many plants are there? Surely, it isn't possible to include every North American plant species in the liquid they inject for skin testing. When skin testing doesn''t agree with the symptom pattern, I'll bet the symptoms are more often right. It might be better to wait for a hard freeze before quitting steroid nose spray. (Then again, maybe you live where there aren't hard freezes.)

BTW, saying someone is allergic to dust mites is a euphemism. People are not allergic to dust mites themselves, but to the mites' fecal pellets. I'm sure you're glad to learn that right before you lay your head on your pillow.

Hypothetically, breathing air not from your bedding, but from the filtered output of an XPAP machine should be helpful to someone whose allergy is only to dust mite feces.

I get allergy shots several times a year. They always took care of the sneezing, but not the nasal congestion. Before CPAP I just put up with the congestion. After I started CPAP Nasonex allowed me to use a nasal pillows mask. I stopped taking it several days before my turbinate reduction surgery.

I guess I'm fortunate that turbinate reduction worked so well for me that I have not had to deal with anything worse than a runny nose each morning (for about an hour after I take the CPAP mask off). The ENT gave me a prescription for Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide Spray 0.06%). I don't like using it because it drys my nasal passages out so much they are uncomfortable the rest of the day. I'd rather just live with a runny nose in the mornings.
