hoping to lose weight

Post by trytryagain » Sun Sep 05, 2010 6:53 am

I am reading here that some of you have or are gaining weight on cpap therapy. I was hoping that getting my sleep apnea under control would give me more energy so that I would lose weight. Am I wrong to assume this?

No, I think you are correct. Using cpap will give you more energy, once everything is tuned in and you have it working at the optimal setting(s) for you.

You will then have more energy to exercise and keep fit.

However, cpap is not a magic way to lose weight! YOU still have to schedule for exercise and do it and YOU have to eat a healthy diet.

Whether or not you lose weight in cpap, has less to do with cpap but lots to do with what you do with your new found energy and health.

I have lost way over 100 pounds while on the machine. It can be done so get at it.

Totally correct. I lost weight but that was because suddenly I had the energy to do things I hadn't done before (cook right, take walks) and just be more active over all and the focus to stay on task. - Kim

Well I actually got a personal trainer and nutrition program started at the same time as starting my Cpap. I no longer had the energy to exercise, hopefully that will come back once everything starts becoming comfortable to me.

So, it appears that cpap use might be more likely to help with weight loss, simply by reducing the cortisol in the blood.
My guess: if someone gains weight-it is atypical; and, hopefully a desired outcome.
I'm about 10 pounds lighter than when I started--just because I grazed to keep myself awake at work, and no longer need to.
Besides, bugs just don't taste as good as they once did. :^P

Been on CPAP for 3 months. Lost 12 lbs in the past 6weeks. Not much but a start. With more energy getting out and walking, making effort to eat better is soooooooo much easier

I started using a cpap June 29th. I have lost 29 lbs. since then. I am having to buy new cloths ( not complaining). I feel great. Wish I had know about my sleep Apnea years ago.

I've started losing some weight recently, I quit smoking after starting cpap & gained a bit but its all evening out now. I too wish I started cpap years ago. Someone told me they thought I had sleep apnea 20 years ago & I thought they were crazy. I've been on cpap therapy for almost 2 years & the worlds a different place.
