2nd night update

Post by pbyeerts » Sun Sep 05, 2010 2:16 pm

My second night on CPAP was definitely better than my first I took some meds to help me sleep, and I was able to sleep from 2am - 9am with my CPAP on - woohoo!! I was then able to go back to sleep for a few more hours (the meds really zonk me out). I actually missed Mass this morning, lol, because for the first time in a long time, I was SLEEPING

I am having mask issues, and will go to the sleep center on Tuesday to get a replacement. I don't like the forehead piece and consequent loss of vision that I have from the mask. I also think it's a little too big for me.....the forehead piece is at my hairline. I sleep on my side, so I'll be reading reviews of good nasal masks for side sleepers today and tomorrow. Also, I sleep with a satin sleeping cap to keep my hair neat, and think I'll be more comfortable without a forehead strap.

Life has been very turbulent for me lately, and I feel more peaceful today. Maybe my anxiety is lower because I got some quality sleep? Or it could be the good old placebo effect. Either way, I'll take it

Cheers,
Pamela

Good for you! I'm jealous. Last night was my fifth night, and the first one that I've been tempted to throw the thing at the wall.. Somehow the seal popped out of my mask around 2 a.m. so I had to turn on the light and refit it into the slots, then I must have gotten twisted in the hose, because all of a sudden at 4 a.m. the machine fell off the nightstand and started beeping like mad. I took off the mask and finished the night without it after having it on all night for the first four. But hey, I got my four hours in first so my health insurer can't say I'm noncompliant.
I couldn't skip church - and just about dozed off while the elders were passing out the communion elements - bad pastor that I am when sleep deprived! I hope the congregation just thinks I was praying extra hard and didn't notice that they'd reached the back of the sanctuary.

I'm a cpap newbie, but I wanted to tell you I've found the Swift LT for Her nasal pillow system to be extremely comfortable. They used a fusion small nasal mask on me for my sleep study and that thing was agonizing. The pressure the forehead piece put on my sinuses was a no-go for me. It hurt the bridge of my nose. It also leaked a lot no matter how much they adjusted it. I was relieved to find the Swift LT for Her to be so comfortable after that. I keep thinking, "maybe if I'd worn this mask during my study they might have gotten better data!"

Oh Bons, I am sorry to hear that you had a bad night. Maybe you need a different mask? Can we return the original one and exchange it for a new one? This is all so new to me, I don't even know how to proceed. I'm planning on calling the sleep center on Tuesday and see what they say. I also have the number for the home care company just in case. I'm not sure who's responsible for what now that I'm officially on CPAP.

Cheers,
Pamela

Pamela,
Most DME's (your home care company) allow a 30 day period to try masks and return them until you can find the one you like. I've learned the hard way - bring your CPAP with you so that you can try the mask at your high pressure. I managed to keep mine on without too much leakage last night, so I'll probably end up staying with it. And I didn't get tangled! Good luck tomorrow.
