Bronchitis and CPAP?

Post by lindakay » Mon Nov 14, 2005 9:43 pm

I was so glad I went to see the doctor tonight rather than waiting - when I found out I have an ear infection, sinus infection, and bronchitis - that I never thought to ask him about using my CPAP with this going on. Actually, he may not have been the one with an answer. I'd like to hear from those of you who have ended up with infections, and how you handled it as far as using your equipment. Thanks!

Acute sinus infection and otitis media (middle ear infection) are listed as possible counterindications in my machine's manual.

Contact a GP or ENT and explain you have a machine blowing pressurized air into your nasal cavity...

I've always used mine when I've been sick (as long as I can still breathe through my nose) and I would swear that I recover from colds and infections quicker. Also I seem to have been getting far fewer bronchial infections and rarely need antibiotics anymore (used to be 2 - 3 times per year).

Still talk to your doc and ask why CPAP would be contraindicated--if it's just a comfort issue, then I wouldn't worry (unless you can't breathe, of course).

I use a FF mask when my allergies are acting up. I have been on CPAP for 8 months now and have not been on antibiotics once! I was sick all of the time before CPAP - on antiniotics every month or so.

I was told to make sure I DO use the machine even when suffering with anything. I have a FF mask to use whenever I have colds or whatnot. Hope you feel better soon
