The best wipe for a mask?

Post by Bearcat42 » Sun Aug 22, 2010 10:19 pm

I have been using the same ole wipies to clean my mask each night since I started on the hose. The thing is that I hate the way my mask smells when I put it on. I am using the Equate brand from Wal-Mart because it was the only alcohol free wipe they had. There has got to be something better out there without having to order from the Internet. Do any of you have any ideas? Thanks!

I don't use wipes.
I use Dr. Bonner's liquid soap, and have recently discovered that when I first foam it in my hands and then rub the foam on the seal, I no longer get the seal cloudy. And I also discovered (longer ago) that I have to use the soap daily and then I get a very good seal.
Not as quick as wipes -- but reliable, and smells great too -- you can choose a smell you like.

Since our much loved little granddaughter recently graduated from potty training magna cum laude we have an enormous supply of baby wipes that will probably never be used. They work just fine on my mask, smell reasonably nice, and I don't get diaper rash on my face either.

I haven't heard of Dr. Bonners and I am curious where it can be found and if it requires washing and drying. Since it is a soap I would assume that would be the case and that is why a wipe is nice because it isn't time consuming.

I couldn't tell where in the US it's found -- but this may help you -- or anyone else who may be interested http://www.drbronner.com/locator/index.php.

I used baby wipes for 2 or 3 years - but the soap is so much better for my seals that I stopped using the wipes -- despite their convenience. Drying isn't a problem - you let the mask dry.

Dr. Bonners can usually be found in any health food store.

I use the citrus cpap wipes that are available at cpap.com. You get a can of 62 (I think) wet wipes. I pull out a half of one and cut it (they are too big for just nasal pillows which I use) and leave the other half in the canister. They are "popup" like kleenex tissues.

I usually still wash the nasal pillows most days with Classic Ivory Dishwashing Liquid. If I get busy I use the wipes (maybe once ot twice a week). One canister lasts forever this way!

PS- I note that cpap.com has unscented wipes as well - same format.

Dear Bearcat42,

Try: http://www.walgreens.com/search/results ... cpap+wipes. They sell at (2) for $14.99. If you don't have a walgreens near you, you can order them over the internet. These wipes don't leave any residual odor and are made for the cpap masks. I use it daily and then take my equipment apart every Sunday and wash the hose/mask parts with ivory liquid. I use distilled vinegar and water once a week on my water chamber to sanitize it.

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

I, too, use the CPAP wipes between washings. As the wipes are so large, I usually fold up the wipe and stuff it in the space under the cap. I use one 3 or 4 nights before tossing it. I have not noticed any premature fogging of the silicone, but I really don't know how long it normally takes...and there are SO many variables.

Cannisters of Clorox non-bleach disinfectant wipes are about $5 for 75 wipes, I think. Target carries them in Orange and I find that flavor so pleasant as contrasted to the bathroom smell of the "lemon" or citrus wipes available elsewhere! Be careful, because the lemon ones have an orange sort of label! Read "Orange."Then get into the practice of cutting each wipe in thirds as you pull them up. Last forever, and at a huge price savings from the "special" wipes on cpap sites.

Did you try both types of Equate Wipes they have the regular and the citrus? I use the citrus one and they work and when I'm done I put it next to the inlet so the air smells like citrus as I go to sleep.

To those using Dr. Bronner's...I'm assuming you also rinse afterwards?

You can buy Dr. Bronner's soaps on http://www.iherb.com or http://www.vitacost.com. No affiliation with either site. I pretty much use natural everything, because I don't like being around so many artificial chemicals....I hate the way they smell.
Symptoms: severe daytime sleepiness and fatigue/tiredness, oversleeping and hypersomnia, dark circles around eyes, sometimes brain fog.
