Surly, that perfectly describes exactly how I and many other people felt when we first tried our breathing machines. That feeling is strange and scary! Especially if you do not know what to expect before putting the mask on. It takes some time to get used to sleeping with air pressure. It kind of reminds me of learning to swim under water. You will get comfortable but it does take several or sometimes quite a few nights to get used to breathing that way. Once you're used to it, you may not even notice the air pressure at all!Surly Abond wrote:Hello,

I will let 420e owners describe that short piece with the two plugs.
Good luck!
Thank You SWS for encouraging words. I not sleep well during first use of breathing machine, It leave me with feeling of much fullness. I must ask again question of small hose with small plugs . What is purpose of small plug. I can npt find a connectionplace for these devices. May I impose assistance from very kind poster. I will remain at book repository computer until I return home . My duties end at 0700 . UCT + 5.5

Surly, I finally figured out what you were talking about. You machine has a sensor tube that goes from the Tyco through the main hose to the mask. When you clean the hose you are to take the plug out of each end of the short tube and plug that small sensor tube at both ends so no water gets in it. The very short piece of tube is to "store" the plugs so they do not get lost.
You might have to scrunch up the hose to get the other end of the tube out enough to plug it.
very simple when you know.

No, if you plug hose there will be NO pressure. Which machine do you have, what are numbers on top 420 ? Will be letter. It sounds maybe you have a straight CPAP where the pressure is set at one level only. You maybe have a "ramp" feature that will allow machine to be set a much lower level for up to 1 hour, so you can fall asleep with machine at lower pressure where it does not blow in your face, so when it reaches top level of pressure you are already asleep.
Also try wearing during day, watching TV, reading. You will get used to air. Must relax when wearing, not think about, concentrate on breathing slow and easy, deep breaths.

Good detective work, Janelle!!
Surly, the small hose should always be inside the large hose. If there are plugs on each end of the small hose, remove those plugs. Save the small plugs.
Put one end of the small hose into a tiny hole on the front of the machine. The machine will not work correctly if you do not stick the small hose into the small hole on the front of the machine.
The other end of the small hose will be near the mask end of the large hose. That end of the small hose doesn't go into anything....just leave it loose inside the large hose, near your mask.
Do not take the small hose out of the big hose. The small hose should always stay inside the big hose.
Save the small plugs that you removed from both ends of the small hose. As Janelle said, you will need to put the small plugs on the small hose whenever you wash the big hose. Those small plugs keep water out of the small hose when you wash the big hose. If you ever lose a small plug, you can use golf tees to plug the little hose when you wash the big hose.
Try to not ever get any water in the small hose. The machine will not work correctly if there is any drop of water in the small hose.

Some people feel that their stomachs become filled with air. Is that what you mean? I don't have that problem so I can't address it.
At the start, it is often difficult to breathe against the higher pressure. Within a week or two that will become much easier. I believe that my lungs actually got stronger and I was able to breathe against the pressure. I can no longer feel the pressure. I now actually have to put my hand in front of the vent to make sure the machine is on.
If you can't sleep with the machine, then just try to sleep with it for an hour each night. If you can't, then take it off. Eventually, you will be able to fall asleep with the mask on.

Surly,
I have some questions for you:
Do you know which type of machine you have - does your machine have the word "auto" anywhere in its name?
Can you tell us the whole name and model number of your machine? (The full name of the machine is usually written on top of the machine.)
Do you know what pressure your machine is blowing?
Do you know how to change the pressure setting yourself?
Is any doctor helping you with the machine?
Will you have to decide by yourself what pressure to use?
