ConTec CMS-50D+ APOLOGY!!!

Post by Slinky » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:11 pm

Had the pants scared off me this evening!!! I cheated and took a nap today. Used my 50D+. When I woke up it was totally dark. Blank. No flashing light that my finger was out. Nuttin. I only had 2 nights on the batteries so was surprised. This evening I put new batteries in it, tried to turn it on - and nuttin. So I tried two more new batteries. Nuttin. I plugged it into the USB. Still nuttin. The phone rang and I forgot about it - UNTIL - this crack or snap!!! What the devil? I could find nothing going on to cause that snap/crack. A very short time later I thought I was hearing some quiet crackling. I rummaged around on the desk top and moved the CMS-50D+. I'll be darned it if wasn't HOT! I quickly unplugged it and opened the battery door. Yeck!!! And no, I did NOT make a mistake putting the batteries in wrong. Both batteries positive side up as directed.

I will contact SEMedical where I bought it from just before Christmas but no way am I going w/another ConTec!!! I'm going back to my faithful ole SP0 7500!!!!

All electronics have a level of failure, one unit gone bad doesn't mean the design or product is faulty. Now if a high % start to have failures, that's a problem. Dealing with computers and hard drives and memory ect, things fail, some are even DOA. Odd's of two AAA batteries causing a fire are slim, however if they keep running down fast, feeding them new batteries isn't a good idea, when things short out only three things are going to happen, Fire, unlikely with two AAA's, new batteries making the short worse or the short opens the circuit shutting the power down.

I just got the 50E, those type of batteries are more dangerious, as they can discharge more power when shorted, and go bad charging. Me worry, not until my finger smells like a grilled hotdog. Jim

Hey Slinky, that's a regulated medical device - http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/c ... 6&lpcd=DQA. You might want to call and submit a formal product complaint to the manufacturer.

I originally started this thread w/the subject: "ConTec CMS-50D+ Warning!!!"

I now find that I owe ConTec one great big public apology. Thanks to Snnnark who caught MY mistake.

I've been using this ConTec CMS-50D+ since I got it around Christmas 2009. WHY, after all this while, I thought the correct way to put the batteries in was w/the same side up on both batteries is beyond me!!! Duh! And Double Duh.

I gotta tell you, this ConTec CMS-50D+ is one TOUGH little ole oximeter!!! I got brave and curious this morning and cleaned it up and inserted two new batteries PROPERLY. And I'll be darned if it doesn't appear to be working! I'm gonna do a "test drive" comparing its reported results w/my non-recording Nonin Onyx oximeter just to be sure. But, so far I have to say I am impressed that it even will light up and start!!! Even if its reporting turns out to be skewed.

Slinky, I'm just glad that you figured out what caused the problem! Sharing your mistake may prevent someone else from doing that and causing more damage. I hope your oximeter will work well for you.

Well, I only ran it for 10 minutes but it agreed w/the Nonin Onyx w/in 1% Sp02 and w/in 1 BPM.

I am flabbergasted. And so pleased! And grateful. Whew! God certainly DOES look after fools! I'm living proof of that!
