taping mouth shut
taping mouth shut
I tried the nasal pillows last night and taped my mouth but then ripped off the tape; but the left over residue from the adhesive seemed to be enough to keep the lips sealed. Does anyone have any ideas about how to keep your mouth shut? I heard denture adhesive...
Thanks,
John

I think you're supposed to leave the tape on.

Re: taping mouth shut
ewww, left over residue?
My tape doesnt do that.. what tape are you using?
I use superband latex free all purpose sports tape.. got it at the 99cent store..
never leaves a residue, I dont even have to wash my face after I take it off.
I also cut a tiny quarter inch slit in the center of it, so I can vent a tiny bit if I have to cough.. keeps the tape
from blowing off, but not enough you can suck air to cause a leak.
You can also pretend there is poisen gas in your room at night before you go to sleeep.
that worked for me one night!

Re: taping mouth shut
I used paper medical tape from the drug store. 10 minutes into the night I said "the heck with this tape" and took it off. But the leakage in the AM was within the acceptable range so I am going to pu the tape on for 1/2 hour before bed and then remove it.
I also am going to try the denture cream and denture strips; I heard those work great. I am thinking that if I were to just keep my mouth shut I probably wouldn't need the machine since I am using it at a pressure level of 7 which is barely a breeze...

Re: taping mouth shut
I use blue painters tape. comes off easy but holds really good while you sleep.good luck!

Re: taping mouth shut
Have any of you tried a full face mask? The tape thing seems a little excessive.
I don't think I would be able to sleep like that. But I guess I used to say that about wearing a machine that blows high pressure air into your nose too

Re: taping mouth shut
I use regular old "yellowish" masking tape. Seems to do the job but I wouldn't mind trying some of the alternatives mentioned here.
Re: taping mouth shut
Have you looked up "chin up strips"? Look them up....I made my own, used 2inch wide micropore tape, cut it 4 inches long and then cut a U in it. Works fine, I sometimes use that or I will tape my big mouth, but leave the corners open "just in case"

Re: taping mouth shut
I wear that as well but it doesn't seem to get tight enough...I will order a smaller one and try that!
Re: taping mouth shut
A lot of us are in FF masks, but taping is good for when we can't/don't use them, and/or to test if we need them, and some people just use it all the time.

FFM and taping here.

I found a full face mask to be sort of like a torture device. With the taping, I am able to use a Swift LT. The Swift is hardly noticeable to wear and it doesn't leave marks on my face. Taping isn't optimal, but using tape and the Swift LT has allowed me to survive with CPAP being part of my life.

Same here. I've tried just about every FF mask out there and could not get comfortable sleeping with a full face mask at all.jweeks wrote:Hi,massive wrote:Have any of you tried a full face mask? The tape thing seems a little excessive.

Ditto to what John said, with my mask's name (Headrest by Aeiomed) substituted throughout.jweeks wrote: With the taping, I am able to use a Swift LT. I think it's great that many people do find a full face mask that suits them fine. I just never could.
Tape and my mask have suited me fine for over five years.

Sleep apnea is not caused by breathing through your mouth and is not cured by keeping your mouth closed.

Re: taping mouth shut
Well I can't judge without ever trying it out. I never came on the forums before I got the FF mask or else I probably would have tried tape. I guess we all find our quirky little "fixes" for getting comfortable with sleeping with a cpap.
Before I got the FF mask I just used a chin strap and kept it as tight as possible, that usually did the trick for me.
