I feel worse now than before cpap
Hello...I have read a few postings from people with the same problems I'm having. Now three months into therapy, major insomnia, sore throat mostly in morning. I feel like I have a head cold, my ears are clogged, when I swallow, they pop and crack. I'm so tired of all this, not to mention ajusting to a ffm from nasal because I could't breath (sinus clogged). Tried neti pot...helps sometimes. Nasal sprays I don't like..tried benadrel...for sinus pressure and sleep-aid...don't want to medicate myself!!! Any advise???? Thanks...love this forum!!

What does your physician say about all this?

Post the details of your therapy for better feedback. Pressure, humidity setting, machine type, mask type. This will help. Sinus congestion/problems often benefit from humidity adjustments higher or lower. What humidity adjustments have you tried?

This is not right. At all. I was going to suggest when I first read the subject line that you need to give this some time to get used to things and catch up on sleep deprivation but your issues are way out of line. Lemme have a closer look here.
Sore throat can be a sign of mouth breathing perhaps but more likely just blowing dry air down your gullet. Get some serious humidity going right away and see if it makes a difference in this regard. The same thing is going to help with all the other side effects as well; the head cold feeling clogged ears, sinus issues, etc. Do not be afraid to use a nasal spray before retiring if you need to - there are some nights that I need to use both a nasal spray and a Benedryl due to allergy season; and I use a Mirage Quattro full face mask on top of that in case I get stuffy... I can mouth breathe. Takes time to get used to it but it works well for me. You need to get one that fits with minimum pressure and one that has a forehead brace, like the Quattro to take the pressure of your nose.
Try cranking that humidity up as high as you can stand it for a couple of nights and report back. You should find that it makes a significant improvement in some areas. I use minimal heating but have the airflow pass over the water reservoir and pick up humidity.... don't know why they don't design these machines like oxygen feeds in the hospital where the air bubbles up through the water and is then picked up and pressurized.
Don't give up!

Fall colours. One of God's gifts. Life is fragile and short, savour every moment no matter what your problems may be. These stunning fall colours from my first outing after surviving a month on life support due to H1N1.

Thanks for replies!! I have Rem star Pro w/ c-flex, heated humidifier, my ffm is a Mirage Quattro and my nasal mask is a Easylife. I havn"t used my humidifier since summer heat started...Toronto Cpap guy...I will try using it again tonite. Since I mouth breath with the ffm, is this why I have a sore throat? I don't see dr. till end of
Aug. I'll try the nasal spray also..anything to feel better!!

Janell, I see you have been on CPAP long enough to start feeling better. With some of us it takes a while to address the sleep deficit I cmae into sleep deficit mode later in therapy. The suggestions about humidity are good.
Perhaps a mild sleeping pill for a short while to get you over the hump. I used to take benadryl, but think my numbers are worse using it for sleep.
Good Luck,
Mary Z.

Re: I feel worse now than before cpap
I think in my instance it is due to the cold air from the air conditioning. In the summer I do not use the humidifier. I have asthma and with the already high humidity levels in the air, it makes me feel I can't breathe. During the day our heat index has been running nearly 100 every day. At night it cools off and the house gets a little cooler than I normally like. Do not suggest one of those new fangled thermostats that adjust the temperature on a schedule. Had one and hated it so much had it replaced with the simple thermostat again.
Could you possibly be having some minor sinus issues? I know that when I have a low grade sinus infection I have many of the same symptoms you are experiencing. Due to allergies I sometimes do not recognize mild sinus infections for a while and they have become more serious.
Good luck and hope you get it worked out.

Janell, that's an excellent AHI, anything under 5 is considered good.

True, but only if leak is under control. If Janell's experiencing higher-than-normal leak rates, the AHI data is unreliable.Mary Z wrote:Janell, that's an excellent AHI, anything under 5 is considered good.

Janell: Get the Encore software and a card reader for your machine so you can monitor your detailed data. Getting the averages from the machine's display is better than nothing, but it won't allow you to troubleshoot effectively when you're having a problem.
When you see your doctor at the end of the month, be sure to get a copy of the detailed data printout. If need be, you can post it here and get more effective feedback and suggestions from the forum members. Hang in there!

Im so sorry to hear about your struggle, I have had the same problems. Have you ever had an ENT look to see if you have any nasal blockages
like polys or deviated septum... Or perhaps you have some nasty allergies.. Or perhaps the air rushing in, is aggravating your throat, nasal passages,
or sinuses in some fashion.. You might be senstive.. talk to your doctor about that too..
I know it can be very frustrating to try to do this when you cant breath to begin with, so I really feel for you..( Im not a fond of medications either, so many side effects)
yes, be sure to get your detailed print outs, there is mystery here, you need help solving it, so start with getting as much information that you
can get right now.. Dont give up, there will be a reason you will find, this is all going on.. It may be more than one thing.. so keep an open mind.
