Dry throat problems

Post by RAMBLINMAN » Sun Nov 06, 2005 12:18 pm

HI All,

Has anyone have had any problems with having a dry throat from your cpap therapy...?

I have been experiencing a dry throat in the middle of the night as well as waking up...I Have Remstar Auto w/ a humidifier and have the humidifier set at 2....

Now I'm not sure on how this humidifier works but is it possible that if I set the humidifier to a higher setting that this would stop a dry throat from occurring?

Usually a dry throat is the sign of mouth leaks, even with the humidifier cranking. Stepping up the humidity might help a bit....or might just give you rainout, but you might want to investigate the mouth leak issue to see if thats your problem.

Ken,

No I haven't.....and I believe I use the same mask as you with the Pro 2 CPAP. On the other hand, I don't use heated humidification......just cold, passover (and plan to use the cold method even through the winter).
All I can say is to experiment with it......turn it up, down or off and see which works best for you. Everybody is different, as are locations due to relative humidity, whether the furnaces are running this time of year (drying and warming the air), etc., etc.

Good luck,

Den

I get that now and then -- dry throat, cotton mouth -- due to mouth leaks when I open my mouth while asleep. It doesn't matter how high I crank up the humidity level.

I don't know if that would be the same as you, though, since you have a full face mask. Could it be your mask is leaking? I would also experiment with increasing the humidity level.

Just a thought... when I exercise and breathing hard, I breathe mostly through my mouth and get dry mouth. If you breathe almost exclusively through your mouth while sleeping even with a FF mask, maybe the same thing is happening. Do you have sinus congestion? If not, then maybe you could also experiment with a temporary homemade chin strap made out of spare elastic.
Gained lasting notoriety for snoring at age four. Finally went to a sleep lab on June 23, 2005. Using CPAP since August 18, 2005.

I get a dry throat if my humidifier is turned too low, the reservoir runs dry (it's done that 2 or 3 times when I didn't put quite enough in it) or if I mouth breathe (thankfully not too often).

Usually my throat, mouth and nasal linings feel great.
