So I saw a rheumatologist...
So the rheumatologist believes I have rheumatoid arthritis (affects 1 in 400 males), and it is purely coincidental that I also have OSA (he left commenting about AWI/PLMs/arousals to the sleep doctor.) When I mentioned the possibility of fluoxetine-withdrawal-induced RA symptoms, he commented that this was unlikely due to RA symptoms emerging prior to fluoxetine withdrawal. Didn't believe that there was any evidence for hypothyroidism based on thyroid function blood results and my normal cholesterol levels. He also didn't believe that I had hyperparathyroidism based on my normal calcium results.blizzardboy wrote:Tomorrow I am off to see a rheumatologist.
So now I am starting on: methotrexate; an antimalarial drug; folate; and a specific brand of Norwegian fish oil for its omega-3 anti-inflammatory benefit (discovered through clinical trials done at Adelaide University; has mercury and vitamin A removed). I am to gradually weaning off prednisone - according to the rheumatologist my GP had prescribed me quite a high dose of the oral steroid - and ramp up my dose of methotrexate over the coming weeks. Weekly blood tests have been prescribed. The rheumatologist said that I am not to take ibuprofen (NSAID) while taking the steroid, but can take paracetamol if an analgesic is required to assist with sleep.
So there you have it: BB is currently a member of the RA-OSA-PLM-AWI subset. Cheers,

It's starting to get tough digging up fresh material for TBT, and our biggest fear now should be that the HTGB Thread will overtake it (however, they should be penalized for rampant "split-posting"-- making 2 or more postings that could/should be easily submitted as one).blizzardboy wrote:So there you have it: BB is currently a member of the RA-OSA-PLM-AWI subset.
There are at least anectdotal reports of methotrexate generating insomnia. While one of these days, another PSG would provide fodder for another 500 posts, I suppose that if overall your sleep is somewhat to much better, and your EDS is well-controlled, it'll be a tough sell.

Re: CompSA, Hypoventilation, PLMs, Bradycardia and Hypotension?
You're right Muffy this thread is under threat, but they've still got a looooooong way to go! So here's my good deed for today.
BB, I must say this is getting all very complicated and I can imagine your frustration. So I will talk out loud based on my personal experience.
While your TSH and T4 numbers do seem ok, your T3 is on the low end. There is a condition where T3 conversion is a problem, so even though TSH & T4 look OK you might still be hypothyroid. Maybe worth reading about that.
On a personal level, when I first started getting hypothyroid symptoms in 2005, my TSH was also right smack dab in the middle of normal but I was way out of sorts. CRP was also very high. Doctor didn't know what to do with all my complaints so wanted to give me antidepressants. Then I found a dental device to help with the sleep apnea and that seemed to help too, but I was still exhausted all the time. Over the years the TSH started to rise. They never tested other T values since the TSH was "normal". In 2007 when I went in for the sleep study the TSH made it up to 6. Still no treatment as they tested it again a few months later and it was back to slightly over 3. Been at 3+ since then. Fully compliant with CPAP.
My friend finally got tired of hearing me complain how tired I was. She had also been diagnosed and treated for hypothyroidism even though she was in the "high normal" range. She told me to try the doctor one last time and if they refused she was just going to give me some of her pills to try for a month! Look it up, thyroid pills are among the safest medication you can take, and you will KNOW if you don't need them because you will develop the hyperthyroid symptoms.
Anyway doctor agreed to give me the pills (last December) and I started at 25 ug and now am at 75 ug, right where I should be. My life has changed immensely. All the symptoms have gone away. I feel like a new person. All along my blood levels were "normal". I believe my thyroid had already started having problems back in 2005 when I got sick. It's now 2010. 5 years of misery kind of sucks.
If for any reason at all you think it might be your thyroid, get some medication, start at 25 ug and titrate your way up slowly.
Another note, did they test the thyroid antibodies? If you have those, then all blood test results are meaningless (links to explanations found on the website i sent). Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is also an autoimmune disorder, so if you have arthritis, which is an autoimmune issue, then it's possible you also have an autoimmune attack to your thyroid!!!!! What does your doc say about that?
Disclaimer (again): I am not a doctor in any way, this is only based on extensive reading and my own personal experience! FWIW & YMMV.
ps Muffy your proliferant use of words like rampant and penalize could subjugate you to amorous interest from the HTGB persons. At your own risk Muffy dearest!

Re: CompSA, Hypoventilation, PLMs, Bradycardia and Hypotension?
Echo, it's so nice to have you back!
So, be proud!
With these very low numbers, is it even possible for hypothyroidism to be an issue? Isn't that more of an issue in the 4's, and higher (and maybe in the 3's), but certainly not the 1's?
Yes, but what you don't know is that none of us on the other thread even KNEW we were approaching that critical #, nor did we care (and probably still don't care), nor do many of know how to keep track of that (which alsopartially explains the "split postings" phenomena). You can take pride in the fact that this thread will always be the longest technical thread, which is hardly intelligible to the average brain, whereas the most technical aspect of the other thread involves how to measure the square footage of an L-shaped closet (and occasionally how to measure members' members, in an attempt to impress other members).echo wrote:You're right Muffy this thread is under threat, but they've still got a looooooong way to go! Echo, now that things are winding down with bb's problems (looks like Muffy is starting the goodbye process, again), maybe you can speak to my thyroid issues. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis a few years ago, and, as determined by my TSH, I remain euthyroid. They don't test anything besides my TSH anymore (although I have some older numbers for T4, T3 Uptake, Free Thyroxine Index, etc.). I get tested every 4-6 months. Examples of some of my last TSH's were 1.49, 1.35, 1.56, 1.89, 2.65, (others in the 2's), 2.99, etc... The highest ever, never to be repeated, was 3.78, and that was more than 2 years ago. All the rest since have been 2's and 1's. Once (or twice?) I had a low PTH, but nothing was made of that in the absence of other abnormalities.Another note, did they test the thyroid antibodies? If you have those, then all blood test results are meaningless (links to explanations found on the website i sent). Yes, and the person who would be most impressed does not read this thread, so she would have no idea that you were advised to show off your extensive vocabulary, which renders you virtually unintelligible to mere mortals.ps Muffy your proliferant use of words like rampant and penalize could subjugate you to amorous interest from the HTGB persons. SU, no worries, I cannot understand most of this thread anyway, I just like to stroke people's ego's
And I like to show off my fancy vocabulary too looks like I will have to enter the "other" thread to get the full benefit
As far as the thyroid, I am by NO means an expert, just what I've read in an attempt to help myself. That said, I will find that link back for you and we can go from there. What you say we move this discussion to a new thread?

I don't think there are any "smooth" operators on that thread, at least among those doing the picking-up (thereby excluding -SWS and Brain_Cloud, who seem to rank highest in vocabulary). This doesn't include the self-serving sociobio clan, who are busy trying to convince us that men are biologically compelled to cheat in order to expand the gene pool for the rest of us. So the competition is pretty weak. Go for it!Muffy wrote:Somehow I don't think I could work that in effectively as part of a pick-up line and still be "smooth".
