Remstar Auto wheezing

Post by puffing billy » Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:51 am

Its a very long time since I have been on the forum but my Remstar Auto has started wheezing, therefore I would appreciate some help.
I guess the machine is getting a little tired as it now has 10200 hours on it.
My question are:-
Is it repairable?
Do the internals get clogged up with dust?
Has anyone succesfully taken one apart.
Can you get the internal spares anywhere?

Failing this what machine to replace it with as I would need to buy it myself and budget is important.
I have looked at the Fischer and Paykel 254 auto but I cant find the software.

Thanks

Billy

Hi, 10,000 hours isn't much on that machine (of which I just retired one with over 50,000 hrs), but I would definitely take it to a dealer and not try to guess what's wrong, let alone fix it. However, if it can't be fixed, they may not be able to replace it as it's no longer on the market, but that doesn't mean people (DME's included) don't have others hanging around of course (I have an almost unused one in the cupboard waiting for my old age or my new System 1 to fall apart).

My original Pro 2 started "wheezing" around the end of the first year I had it. I had CPAP.COM send it in to the factory to be fixed because it was still under warranty and it's been wonderfully silent since then. My guess was that it was something in the C-Flex mechanism (fan?).

There are probably a couple of ways you could go.
If you want to get it fixed or see how much it would cost, you could contact this place. They do authorized repair work on Respironics machines.

If you don't have a backup machine........you should keep an eye on some of the new/used machines on the auction site.
Within the last few months, I've bought two "new" (unused) Pro 2 machines for a fraction of what my original cost was or what newer machines are going for. I just looked and there are a number of Legacy models with low hours up for bid on there. The auction site is also owned by CPAP.COM.

Just curious Den, do you have any curiosity at all about the new PR System One?

It occured to me that things wheeze when they cant breathe, so I looked at my fine filter, I think this might be the cause.
I will try a new filter tonight and see if that makes a difference.
I will keep you posted.

I think the tank is a brilliant machine and was designed to be the best, then the production engineers got at it to make it cheaper.

I f I bought a secondhand machine how would you go about sanitising it?

I'm not sure how you WOULD "sanitize" it, short of disassembling it.....and except for worst-case scenarios, you wouldn't want to do that. Try to make sure you get one that's been from a non-smoking household. Clean or replace the filter and hope for the best. Hopefully the previous user used filters and kept them clean. They're going to take in room air and filter it before you breathe it. There are also some good sellers on the auction site, so check out their "feedback" from previous sales.

I would call anything less than a couple of thousand hours "low use"......especially if the price is right.

If you're looking at the auction site and want a data-capable machine, keep in mind that there are "REMstar Pro" Legacy models that were discontinued in 2005 at about the time that the "Pro 2" models came out. The "plain" Pro models weren't data-capable and the Pro 2 models are.
If you're looking at the Auto models......try to make sure they are the models with "C-Flex" (blue sticker on top). If they're not, they obviously won't have C-Flex and they'll be much older......like pre-2005, at least.

One "Pro 2" I bought a couple of months ago had only 10 blower hours on it and the one I'm now waiting for supposedly has ZERO blower hours.

I agree with Dennis....TANKS RULE........ After the new PR System One came out and I looked at EP2 I went out and bought 2 new/used Tanks. The way I have it calculated I will expire before I run out of Tanks!!!

Thanks for the info Den
I would need to buy an auto, however I dont use cflex so an older model would not matter.
What do think is a reasonable price to pay, based on buyin some previously.

As I mentioned earlier that I had changed the fine filter and also cleaned the main filter well this seems to have worked.
Thanks for all the help
