Rainout Resmed Swift FX mask

ResMed recommends that you set Climate Control to AUTO in the clinician menu. I did. They also recommend very strongly against using any kind of hose covering on their climate control hose as it will prevent it from working its magic and is a fire hazard. I no longer use the hose cover. I have my humidity set at 3.0 and no rainout; we have our room temp set to 69F nightime and 72F-74F daytime all year round, regardless of season. (There's just something about those static temperatures that we like).

Can't wait for the S10 to come out next month. Sic.

ResMed may indeed recommend the Auto Climate Control to prevent rainout....... but when using Auto mode and numerous temperature settings I was still getting rainout.
And ResMed had no answers!

Re the hose cover, I doubt that a temperature of 25 to 26C would be a fire hazard.

My understanding of the auto mode is that the humidity is a constant 80%. With a ClimateLine connected, and AUTO climate control, you cannot set the humidity manually.

As my trial period finishes at the end of July, I was intrigued by your comment "Can't wait for the S10 to come out next month". Do you have any more info on the S10 that you can share?

I was being sarcastic with regards to the ResMed S10 - still trying to figure out some of the features on the S9 like the Climate Control system. When I set the system to AUTO I get a front panel setup from 0 - 6 I believe and no choice of temperature. I think you are correct in that humidity is at 80% but it did not feel like it. Lots of little quirks we need to get under our belts with this machine; one thing for sure is that it seems to be an improvement of some degree over the S8 Autoset II for me.

The fire hazard is not during normal operation of the climate control tube but rather if the wiring should develop a small short in it. It will superheat and ignite that portion of the cover that is in contact; or perhaps they intended for it to melt through the plastic to release the toxic gases into the room rather than blowing it all into your lungs. Don't know for a fact. But I am a hobby rocketry afficianado and we use small lengths of shorted wire dipped into a pyrogen to ignite gunpowder to blow off the nosecone and release the parachutes; it gets white hot instantly and lasts for up to a second. Enough to leave a burn mark on our wooden deck (but not set anything on fire). I think that is what they have in mind. CYA.

Hi Murray,

Do you have/use the heated ClimateLine hose?
Before you attach the ClimateLine the S9 front panel allows you to set the humidity between 0 and 6. As soon as you attach the ClimateLine hose the humidity option disappears and is replaced by the temperature option.

Give that little bugger a bit of a twist and it makes contact with the pins on the blower! And presto... temperature showing. I have never really had any issues with rainout as of yet but there's always a first time. I set up to avoid it with the blower/humidifier on the nightstand and the hose heading upwards before coming back down to my mask. Use a hose cover and keep humidity set low. Will have to see how the S9 keeps up with the S8. Am about to try different masks as well. I also note that once you connect the climate hose that the selection for what type of hose you are using disappers. Smart eh?

Just thought I would sympoathise with you empezza. I am in Dunedin (NZ) and use the Swift LT and I do get rainout problems with climate line set to auto even in the warmer weather. I have turned it to manual. When it was warmer I found the setting 26° or 23° with humidity at 4.5 was good for almost no rainout and very comfortable for me (I need a lot of humidity) but for the last few nights with temp in bedroom at about 10°C the rainout has increased so I am going to turn humidity down to 4. I could turn the temp down but I dont like the cold air blowing on my arms. I have insulated the Swift tube but it is not enough.

Brr.. it is cold here at the moment. Yesterday it didnt go above 4° all day. Our bougainvillea is finally deciding it is winter and its flowers are dropping off! However it is really gloriously spring like with blossom out, crocuses and narcisii looking cheerful. The kowhai are a picture.

I got the Swift barrel cozy from Padacheek to help with Swift FX rainout that was just in the nasal pillow as I had it eliminated in the hose itself. There is one for the Swift FX and the swift LT. Works well and very comfortable.
