Friend in denial about OSA...
I have a friend that I am pretty sure has OSA. He thinks cause he is healthy and works out all the time that he doesn't have it. Is there an assessment tool that I can have him answer a few questions and have it tell him if he is at risk?

Marc,
In addition to the places Lori listed, I think there's even one of those forms on your Encore Pro CD in .pdf format. I can't remember exactly where it's at, but if you "Explore" your CD, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

The assessment quizzes steered me into getting checked out originally...along with some severe prodding by my wife about my snoring.
Trying to get people to followup seems to be really difficult though. I finally got my sister and her son(I suspect he has severe apnea) to go to a sleep doc and they got a sleep study done, but they refuse to go back and pick up the results.
I guess they figure the sleep study must have cured them? Or it scared them away and figure its not worth the price of admission to get treatment, IF they need it.
So in addition to the screening questions, you might send a link or two to sites that list some of the damage that can be done by untreated apnea, to get him inspired to go through the effort of actually dealing with it.

Lori- Thanks for the list. I had been searching on google for an hour and had only came up with one that had 5 questions and just about no matter how you responded, it said you had it
I think that most people are reluctant to get diagnosed because they can't imagine living the rest of their lives with something on their face at night. Thing is, I can't imagine not having it on my face after only a month on it. I won't even take a nap without my mask. I don't even go to my car at lunch to take naps anymore, cause I can't sleep without my mask

That site must have been a site that sells cpap-related goods.cybergoon wrote:Lori- Thanks for the list. I had been searching on google for an hour and had only came up with one that had 5 questions and just about no matter how you responded, it said you had it

You're right about people's reluctance for the reason you stated. Which it's probably a very good suggestion made by "Guest" to get some links to things that can happen when OSA goes untreated. If that doesn't scare him, he's got one tough shell to crack. Good luck. You're a good friend to be trying to help like this. And you would hope he'll listen to you and how you feel about treatment after a month. You are a walking advertisement for therapy.

Give your friend a voice activated mini tape recorder!
You can find it at Target, WalMart, Best Buy...anywhere...for less than $20.
It's what I did when I wondered whether or not I had OSA. Boy Howdy, I was shocked to hear how pitiful I sounded and how loudly I snored. It was those ominous 20 seconds of silence that prompted me to get to my doctor. I knew I was a snorer; but I had no idea how bad off I really was.
Give it a shot, it may work!
