Quieting my S9 (may work on any machine).

Post by kurth83 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:48 pm

Sleeping in hotels is good for me, if I sleep better there, I try to figure out why
and "take it home".

My S9 has seemed loud to me, couldn't sleep on my side because the noise of my own
breathing kept me awake. Everytime I inhaled it sounded like a hurricane
in whichever ear was contacting the pillow.

Last week took a trip, it was much quieter in the hotels, and think I figured out why:

1) my mattress is dense (tempurpedic), somehow this amplifies the breathing sound.
2) the S9 and hose in the hotel were on a padded chair pressed up against the bed,
somehow this muffles the sound.

Normally, my S9 and hose are on a hard-wood floor,
so I tried arranging them on a pillow, and voila, the sound is way less.

Just find some old, thick mouse pads to put it on. It deadens the noise and won't allow it to slide around.

I like little tricks like this. Anything to improve the quality of sleep is a good thing.

resting the CPAP on a soft surface reduces noise, but the air intake must not be able to be blocked, never cover the CPAP for the same reason

air filters take longer to block if CPAP is on a bedside table, lots of dust, dog hair, etc down on the floor

I have not seen the S9 design yet so cannot really comment but what I can say is that the mouse pad idea works wonders for my S8 as well and on the S8 I have put a piece of teflon material that I had lying around on top of the mouse pads to ensure that there was airflow around the BOTTOM of the blower.... it may not require it for air intake but it certainly will lengthen the life of your electronics by keeping things a wee bit cooler perhaps. By the same token, we recently purchased replacement batteries for our laptops and they have a 'hump' at the back that elevates the bottom of the laptop off the table - it runs cool as a cucumber now. Just some food for thought. And what a great idea those mousepads are! Thanks.

Staying in hotels is so wonderful....

It was my first hotel stay with CPAP that I discovered a way to quiet my machine.

good idea... I will try that with my S8 tonight, as last night was the first night I used it, and noticed it was louder than my REMstar I was trialling before...

wasnt that much louder, but it was still noticable...

If a person doesn't have any old mouse pads lying around, there's some basket-weave-type rubbery material you can buy for lining drawers or putting under throw rugs to keep them from moving around. It comes in rolls and can be cut to shape. It's not as thick as an old mouse pad, but is a non-slip type of material and should help reduce the noise (vibrations).

Just a caution--I think these types of materials can permanently mark wood.
