My Dad has ALS and breathing problems. Needs a new mask.

Post by Red20 » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:11 pm

Hello. My Dad has been having breathing problems since last year.

Originally the Dr diagnosed him with COPD, but after further decline we went to the Mayo Clinic and he was diagnosed with ALS. For 6 months my Dad had to sit in the living room and sleep in a chair, because his diaphragm is so weak he can't breathe on his back.

Now he is using an Adapt SV, but he has a sore on the bridge of his nose. We are afraid he is going to get an infection and need a different mask.

I bought him a Mirage Swift II Nasal Pillow:

A technician came out to help him fit it, but they said it won't work with an Adapt SV. Does that make sense? And what are his options?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Red20,
I'm a sleep tech. I would think that mask would work just fine. But I was just surfing Resmed's site and found this:
http://www.resmed.com/us/assets/documen ... er_eng.pdf

On the third page, it shows the mask you have in the chart and that it is "not validated" for that machine. Perhaps you can e-mail Resmed to find out if they have validated it yet. If not, in the link above, it lists other masks that will be compatible.

You have the right idea in changing the masks for your father's comfort and to help that sore heal.

Go to Padacheek.com and look among the products for something to protect his nose - there may be a couple of things that would work with a suitable mask. I agree that the Swift is not one of those.

Try the sequal comfort care pad. Resmed did not test teh swift with the ASV, therefore they are not sure if the results will be skewed.

The ResMed Liberty? It's validated, and leaves the bridge free.

Thanks for that list. It will be very helpful!
