What kind of mattress do you prefer?

Anybody using a water bed any more?

Believe it or not, YES. I wouldn't trade it for anything but another one. No more backaches, shoulder aches, no aches or pains at all.
Why am I slightly embaressed to admit I have a water bed????
I don't know. Hubby and I love it.

That brings back some fond memories. We had a water bed in the 1970s. All I remember is that it was cozy-warm and it was fun to make waves. I understand that they've come a long way in the last 30-40 years and don't slosh around like they used to!

I think we're gonna try a latex memory foam mattress topper, and maybe a couple of memory foam pillows. Maybe 3 or 4 inches on the mattress. Can you have too much, too thick? If you buy too thick then your stuck. Maybe buy 2 inches and then buy another later to put on top of that? Not sure if that's even a good idea. Any thoughts?

As I mentioned earlier, if the topper plus your existing mattress would be too thick to accommodate your fitted sheets, that could be a hassle. But some of the sheets now are generously sized that way. Also, if you're a short person or have difficulty getting in and out of bed for some reason and added too much extra height that may make it more difficult. As far as stacking goes, as long as the two layers wouldn't slide around due to the fabric coverings it'd probably be fine.

You mentioned a "latex memory foam" mattress topper. There is latex foam and there is memory foam. Are you talking about some kind of combination of the two types of foam, or did you mean latex foam? Just be sure you're getting what you intended, as the two types of foam are very different.

Whatever you get, I hope that you and your wife will sleep well.

Learned this from my uncle. I inherited his bone structure problems, so this is 2nd generation info. The best mattress to protect the back is super soft on top of super hard. He used a goose down on top of a solid sheet of plywood. I use a temperpedic type foam mattress directly on the hard floor. Mine is 2" of temper material on top of 4" of regular foam rubber. I learned the reason on two seperate occasions to the emergency room. I was forced to sleep on regular box spring and mattress after having low back surgery. This was where people could drive me and check on me in their home. What happens is that you go to turn over in your sleep and you injure your back. The foot can't find a solid place to land which sends the muscle into cramping mode which dislocates the discs and pinches the nerves. With the hard floor less than 6 inches away, you're able to turn easily and prevent that injury. The soft layer on top allows the spine to find a comfortable curve to rest in when you're not tossing about.

Beware of mold growth, and tempurpedic rocks (almost):

I used to use a foam mattress on a hard wood floor,
Water condensed on the floor, the mattress got wet and grew mold on the bottom.

I built a 3" high wood frame for it too late, the damage was done.

I replaced it with a new tempurpedic Advantage, nice mattress, but was too firm for me.

New memory foam fumes were too strong for me, caused nasal congestion.
I let them air out for about a week (until the smell was gone), and now they are great.
The label said they are made out of polyurethane, same stuff in indoor house paint,
that explains why they smell like paint too.

Having a mattress low to the floor (and movable) makes CPAP hose routing a snap,
just put the machine on the floor at the head of the mattress.

He does 4" layers in four different firmness settings. You can get queen/king sizes with split pieces (soft for your wife, firm for you or whatever)
I was 400+ when I bought mine (Xfirm,Xfirm,Firm,Medium) and it's held up well, extremely comfortable, cooler & cheaper than the memory foam.
Called them first, and they had one made up to try. I just have a mattress on a steel frame. If you go latex, be aware it's heavy.

I added another memory foam topper on top of my original memory foam topper and it did slide around because of the fabric. I fixed that by putting both of them on my mattress and then put my mattress cover over all. I have a mattress cover than fits over the mattress, including the sides.......so, I have orignal mattress, 2 memory foam toppers, then my mattress cover....nothing moves around.

There are mattresses that have separate layers of each type of foam, such as a memory foam layer on top of latex foam layer(s), but I wasn't aware of a topper that combined both types of foam, so I just wanted you to be sure that you're getting what you really intended. If it does describe the topper as "latex memory foam," I suggest you inquire further to be sure.

This is what we put on top of our fairly new mattress after recommendations here. It's great because it doesn't sink like the memory foam which would have made it difficult for my husband to turn over with his bad hip. There was no odor and it's holding up well. It comes in different sizes and densities.

I sleep on a water bed...no apologies! And they don't slosh around like they used to. Baffles or something in there to stabilize.

I must admit, though, the guest bed is a foam mattress type....and it is even more comfie than the water bed. Got it from the Original Mattress Factory...
