Care and Feeding of Heated Australian Hoses

Post by dkeat » Thu Oct 27, 2005 12:37 pm

Got my handy dandy heated Australian hose in the mail today. Looking forward to trying it out. Have two questions if anyone out there has experience:

1. is DC 12 V 800 ma enough to power it or does it really need to have 12V 1 AMP?

2. The instructions say NOT to immerse the whole thing in water but to simply "Wash the inside of the tubing in luke warm soapy water. Do not wash the outside of the tube. Rinse the inside of the tube completely using clean water then allow to drain and dry. I am wondering how you wash the inside in soapy water without immersing the tube?

I hold the hose in a U and use a piece of paper as a funnel to add the soapy water. I then take a hose connector off an old mask to put the two ends together. You then swish it around inside the hose drain, add clean water and do again.

Slip it over the tap and let the water flow thru .

Power supply, I'd look for one of those multi volt units . This gives you some control over the temperature, I use a 1 amp unit myself. If you have a 420 E you can piggyback it to the 420 power supply .

Hi David,
I don't try to take off the cover... it is attached with glue probably. I use the same process to clean my hose by holding it in a U shape and swishing the water up and down. I dont' actaully worry too much about a little water getting on the outside of the hose. I like the idea of using an old hose connector, i will have to try that.
Take Care!

Teri's right...the heated hose's thin flannel cover is glued on each end of the hose. On the very rare occasions I've rinsed out the inside, I've held it in a U, poured soapy water in, juggled it up and down like a Slinky toy, and then held one end to the faucet for thorough rinsing. (Sometimes remembering to have the other end in the sink! )

Mike's hose connector idea for a "closed cleaning circle" is cool. Now why didn't all the rest of us think of that?!!

Maybe its because you didn't try to use it as a hula hoop first LOL

A tube brush is also available. The brush end has about 4 inches of bristles and a 5' wire handle which will work in a 10' hose. It scrubs out the inside of hose. Just another cleaning idea, some sites sell them.

I don't even want to THINK about a hose that was so dirty it needed a brush to clean it properly.....ewwwwww. Now that is SCARY!
