Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
I used an M Series Respironics Bipap Auto for about 5 years prior to getting a new PR System One Bipap Auto and have used the new unit for 5 nights running.
Prior to my new machine, I was waking up 2 or 3 times a night for whatever reason. I would fall back asleep eventually and I chalked it up to apnea events or other anomalies that I had no control over.
Since I have started on the System One, I have slept through most of the nights completely, and on the occasions I would wake up, it was only once, and sleep returned almost immediately.
This may be happenstance, and should things change, I'll report on it, but some of the reasons I attribute to better sleep occurences are as follows:
1) The system ships with the lightweight performance tubing, pure white and very flexible to body turns, with no resistance to movement. This is further helped by the new swivel hose connector moved to the top of the humidifier facilitating movement as sleep position changes.
2) Sensors which curtail excessive moisture from the heated humidifier entering the hose and eventually ending up in my nose. Continued use has unfortunately brought back moisture problems, so I've returned to using the Aussie heated hose.
3) A much quieter unit that doesn't interfere with sleep, although I must admit that the M Series that I used before was very quiet. The only noise factor is with the breathing in and out of the nasal mask.
4) I think they've refined the sleep algorithm even further to be as effective as possible.
5) When I go to bed at night I have a confidence factor in the new device which settles any apprehensions that I previously had and comforts me that I am being treated as well as possible.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
Just got a BiPap prescrip. and was thinking of getting this machine. Glad to hear it's working for you
Anyone else have experience with it?

Anecdotal provider findings...
We have fewer newbie complaints and issues with the System One. I can't tell you how amazing it is not to deal with rainout! Patient's who have switched from the M Series to the System One seem very happy and always say they like the new machine better.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
Paul B,
You have the Bi-Pap Auto so my machine is like a "bottom of the list" unit. I have the Remstar Pro Cflex+ (System One) running in a straight CPAP mode (doctor's orders ).
I am completely underwhelmed And those "pressure pulses" can make getting to sleep a chore sometimes. I think ResMed seems to have a better handle on the clear airway checking algorithm.
I would give my unit a "5/10". (OBTW this could be construed as a "complaint")
It's like a Honda Civic, It can get you to some of the same places as a Cadillac, but the journey may be a little "rougher".
Glad your unit is working out for you Sounds like you have "paid your dues"

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
I cant compare the two, as I have only had the system one, and I feel lucky that was my first machine.
It is a very nice machine, I liked it a lot, but I am a very slow breather, and it has a "PRE event " detection feature
which is probably wonderful for most people. I think it was designed to send a pressure pulse of air to check if
your airway might be blocked if you didnt inhale in a certain amount of seconds.. Very nice feature, but just didnt
work well for me, because I take forever to exhale and start another breath.
This might distract a very slow breather.

Can you turn off that "pressure pulse" feature? Like you can turn off Ramp or Cflex or Aflex on other models?
Cheers,

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
This sure shows that we are all different. I have the Remstar Pro C-flex plus. The reports show dozens of pressure pulses. I have never felt any of them. When I deliberately hold my breath, I notice a slight pulse but nothing at all objectionable. I have a pressure of 13 and a C-flex plus setting of 2. Been very happy with the machine.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
Like Photomatt, I am virtually unaware of these pressure pulses using this machine. Ocassionally, I notice something that MIGHT be one of these pressure pulses but it is not disturbing to me in any way.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
When I was put on bipap (after failing on cpap) I was given the PR System One. When I noticed an occasional failure to switch to the inhale pressure and reported it (and they decided to finally listen), they gave me a M Series on loan to try to see if the same thing happened. The M Series could not recognize my breathing patterns at all and never switched to the inhale pressure. It just stayed at the exhale pressure consistently, despite my repeated inhale/exhale attempts to get it to switch. The System One did a much better job and recognized it most of the time, where the M Series NEVER could recognize it.
Thus the switch to the ventilator.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
Fortunately, I have never experienced the pressure pulses that others have commented on, but unfortunately it appears these pulses are part of the "therapy" and can't be disabled. Perhaps Respironics will make this a patient settable feature in a future release of the firmware, along with a GMT offset setting.
Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
I am completely unaware of the pulses when they happen. I only know they are there because I see them on the waveform reports.

Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
I like the OP had he M and then upgraded to the S1. You couldn't take it away from if you wanted to! I agree with all but #1-The DME kept my new tubing because I had the M for only 3 months. Like I said, It's a great machine. I look forward every evening to turning it on and SLEEPING! I have ben sleeping for 6 months now!
Re: Anecdotal findings from PR System One vs. M Series
I was at my pulmanary docs office yesterday with my system one. My number one problem was the pressure pulses, and
those cant be disabled from what I understand.. its a very nice pre event feature for most people, and I have read here,
they are barely detectable..
My problem was that they were going off a couple times a minute while I was AWAKE.. and trying to go to sleep..
so I was getting no where fast.. Im sure these pulses start on most folks AFTER they have fallen asleep.. but Im weird I guess,
I pretty much suck at breathing while Im awake too!
Anyway, I was having a very difficult time trying to ignore these pulses, I would just be relaxing, and POOF.. or just start to
think about some nice happy thing, and POOF! over and over all night long.. Im sure when I finally went to sleep, I slept thru them.
I explained all this to my pulmanary doctor, I brought the info on the machine I thought would better suite me because of
my awake breathing issues, and I left with an S9..
If I hadnt had trouble with the pressure pulses, or the hardly detectable tone (husband cant hear it) the system one made, I would have kept it.
It was very nice.
I do know now, that I can fall asleep much faster w/o the pressure pulse feature, as none of that happened last night with the s9.

I keep reading about the pressure pulses. I *THINK* I know what you guys are referring to, but I swear I never really noticed them when they occurred.
