Interesting Sleep Results on Cough Syrup

Post by pb5927317 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:14 am

Everyone,

Last night I took a teaspoon of Tussien prescription cough syrup. I dont think I woke up once last night.

Interestingly enough, my AHI was 2.3 (usually around 6) and my max pressure was 14.6 (usually 19.6).

Any ideas why the improved results?

Pat

Hi pb,
Before I started regressing in January, I noticed that when I would take a xanax before bedtime, my numbers were always great in the morning. I think its because after a sleep-type medicine, we move alot less during the night. I think its all our movements that can increase the AHI.

In terms of Obstructive (not Central) Apnea I've never heard of cough syrup helping, but it is something you're swallowing and the idea is to help lubricate the throat. It might be something to the soft palet perhaps, probably not conclusive enough for one night, you'd need to do it over multiple nights. Unfortunately AHI's change on a nightly basis, the last week mine's been a lot higher than normally. It's usually best to set a benchmark of a couple of weeks on testing things.

I suspect if you try it over multiple nights or a week you'll find that it may have just been a low AHI last night not because of the cough syrup but just because you had a better night. e.g. sleeping on your side rather than your back, or your upper airway wasn't blocked as much if you suffer from Obstructive Apnea, or maybe your brain didn't not send the signal to your muscles in terms of Central Apneas.

If it helps you long term then that's great Everyone has their own fixes and rituals that they go through on a nightly basis, like neti pots etc.

Thanks
Dave

Maybe it helped relax your muscles, something which this seller on ebay claims can cure your sleep apnea

I tried that last summer. It was fine for a while, but after 22 days I had a twitch and started talking to fire hydrants. (After 27 days, they were talking back!)

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.

How much alcohol in the cough syrup? I always seem to sleep better on a glass or two of wine.

Its $45.99 on his web site. It cures OSA and CA. And he'll refund you (minus shipping and rush? charges) if no improvement after 30 days.

Come on somebody with an S9 and software, try it out!!

Do you normally wake up a lot at night, and if so, for periods of time? If yes, my guess would be that your AHI contains data from the time you are awake, which skews the data. At least for me, there are more "events" when I'm awake.

Hi All

The following links might clarify what might be happening -

http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/wellbei ... -9y8f.html

http://www.teenoverthecounterdrugabuse. ... amine.html

Heroin addicts use it to help with withdrawall or when supplies are low.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin

and it can also be used as a primary addiction itself

http://www.egetgoing.com/drug_rehab/cou ... ations.asp

Cough syrup is not something to be taken without making sure it is safe to do so. And never for babies. And probably not a good idea to give to teenagers, or anyone with a known addiction potential, as it can be very "moorish".

And don't forget -

And finally -

Depending on how bad and long the Apneas are for, it's possible, more probable would be just very sleep deprived and over time brain matter dying.

I really hate all the leaches trying to make a quick buck scheme, there's so many out there. Most of these fall into the category of "it might work for you, try it" or "wonder drug" - more to the point that you "wonder ABOUT the drug".

Not dismissing cough syrup it might be helping some people a little but it's not a substitute for proper therapy. It's almost like trying to crack a nut with a blade of grass rather than the sledge hammer.

Thanks
Dave

Prescription 'Tussins' often have codeine in them, but codeine is supposed to make apnea worse, right?

FYI, I repeated the test last night, and my AHI dropped to .5.

The night before it was 8.
