Silverlining3.6 and Windows7

Post by plr66 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:55 am

I was just forced to get a new computer, and am suffering with starting all over on so many levels & trying to retrieve so much stuff beyond the basic transfer of files. UGH.

I do, however, love Win7!

Has anyone found a driver that can be successfully installed for Puritan Bennett's software to make it possible to run on Win7?

PLR - there are 2 issues here:
1. Could you install the software on Windows 7 and does it run at all on it?
2. Does your new computer have a serial port?

If SL3 isn't capable or running on Win 7, I'd consider 3 possible options:
  • The newer version of Silverlining, which runs on Vista
  • Using some kind of Virtual Machine software
  • Creating an XP partition on the disk for running SL3
If your problem is only 2 -- lack of a serial port -- then you need a serial to USB converter cable -- they come with drivers, and -- on XP -- solved the problem for me. You will have of find one with drivers for Win 7 of course.

Well I followed you this far!
Yes, Silverlining appears to have installed okay. I have been using the serial to USB converter cable from the start with PB420E. The driver disc is not successfully installing, and the one time the computer popped up a compatibility window, it appeared to install, but not. I can only get as far as the Connection window when I open Silverlining--and it is dead--does not even search for a connection.

The driver for the serial to USB converter cabel depends on the company who made the cable -- have you tried searching for them on the net?

Aachh--I guess I'm SOL on that, as neither the disc nor the envelope have the company source written on them.

hey OZIJ

windows 7 has a XP compatablity mode that will enable you to 98% of all software that you may encounter.
I too have windows 7 and love it. It may not work any better then it pedicessors but I like the interface a lot more the XP and Vista well that was never on m,y radar as a operating system that was worth the hassle.

Per Ozij's suggestion, does anyone have a later version of SilverLining software that works on Vista? (or Win7?) The obsolescence issue is really troubling to me, and I see no reason for a new machine if I can figure out a fix for this!

I have an older version of SL (3.10) so I don't think I can help you on the software side, plus I'm on WindowsXP.

But I had a similar problem on WinXP, that it wasn't searching for the connection. I changed computers and the new one didn't have a serial port, so I had to get the USB to serial converter... had a TON of troubles with it until I changed the COM port to another one (e.g. COM2). The annoying thing is that the whole time it kept saying that the problem was the driver wasn't loading, so I thought it was a driver problem. So perhaps you're having a COM conflict and that's why it's not even searching? Has it complained about the driver not installing properly?

I also used the new driver for the USB2serial converter, which includes drivers for Win7. It's the CP210x Virtual Com port for Windows 7. Download it here:
https://www.silabs.com/Support%20Docume ... ista_7.zip

After you unzip it, then just run the executable, and then if necessary change the port. (I can give you a step-by-step on how to do that but based on WinXP).

That's assuming your problem is with the driver. If it's due to Windows, I dunno

EDIT: while O's right, the drivers will depend on the manufacturer, I have a suspicious feeling they all tend to use a similar/same chipset in the converter. I've seen that with other types of converters. You can also find back info on the current driver from your Device manager or whatever it's called in Win7.

Peggy,
Echo has a good idea.
Also -- chech the speed of that com port you choose. SL3 wants it at 9600.

I suggested a newer version when I thought SL3 itself wasn't running on Win 7.

However, your problem is a hardware problem -- no com port on the computer-- and possibly, lack of a Win 7 compatible driver for your com to USB converter.

I'd buy a new converter cable if I did't find updated drivers for the one I have. I doubt the updated SL3 will help you read the data without the correct drivers for the com to USB converter
