Has Anyone Else Ever............

Post by Komodo » Tue Mar 30, 2010 10:50 am

BECOME uncomfortable with their therapy?

I've been being treated for 10 months, and from DAY ONE, I had ~zero~ problems wearing a mask, or the noise from my cpap. I'd put on my mask and be sound asleep in seconds!

HOWEVER..

That is no longer the case. My mask (ANY mask I wear) annoys the heck out of me, the noise from my cpap (which is actually very quiet) sounds like a jet engine in my bedroom, and air blowing from the mask vents feel like a hurricane. I'm having a really, REALLY, hard time falling asleep. Two hours of trying to sleep before getting up for an hour and trying again.
When I finally DO get to sleep, I'll sleep through the rest of the night.

Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this, and if it's a "phase" or can I expect this to be a nightly routine?

Be positive..........you have to believe that it's just a phase and your formerly positive attitude and experience will return!

Hang in there.........

Thing Change, that's the one thing you can count on. You may be doing something a little different, or it may be you are more rested and not sleeping as soundly. Running background sounds may help. Jim

It's just a phase. The time change and alignment of the sun is changing. Try some classical music and deep breaths. I feel that it is all going to work out for you. The stars are about to realign. Spring is coming. It this does not work.....get out and smell the spring coming. Good luck

Yes I have and still do on occassion.
I chose Moonbeam , because even though therapy was working for me I still have
about 3 nights a month where the phase of the moon affects my sleep pattern.
Go to bed before I am sleepy forget it. I am just going to lay there
and get aggravated with the whole shebang.
Also I get high strung once in awhile the noise will drive me nuts.
Plus early to bed early to rise is not in my gene structure.
All this said this is what I do on nights when I have trouble

1 I don't go bed before I am sleepy or feel that I can go to sleep. " Everynight"
2 give myself permission to get up, "after finding quality of sleep for me is better
than quantity."
3 I set my ramp 8.5 for 30 min I know that noise of the pressure rise won't
disturb me "min is 9 "
4 On high strung nights I take Kava Kava and eat a little yogurt, watch
boring TV or a least something relaxing, when sleepy go back to bed.
5 Get up at my regular time go to bed at my regular sleepy time that night is
pretty well guaranteed to be good.

My usual bedtime was 11 to 12 and trying to change that for therapy reasons
just plain stunk.
Of course all of these may not be needed on the same night .
Also I have some relaxation techniques that work for me that I use

I did not take to therapy as easily as you in the beginning, that being said
I can understand your frustration .

May I suggest that you return to your favorite mask and what was
working for you during the good times
Try to iron out what is disturbing you now.

If I'm having trouble falling asleep, I'll turn on one of the late shows on TV....I set the timer for 30 minutes and I'm usually out in 10-15.

I'm still positive, and fully intend to continue my therapy as usual.

More rested? No. Exhusted is closer to the truth. Almost as bad as before I started therapy.

Things change? This is true! I'm switching from Cpap to Vpap this Thursday, AND, I'm getting a new style mask. I hope this "change" is for the better!

Sorry you have the same "sleepless" nights I'm having, but it's nice to know I'm not alone.

I already do the above three things, thanks for caring Moonbeam.

Yeah, my "season of discontent" has just passed - again. I've changed my straps that hold on my Headrest mask about 4 times in the past couple months. Think I've finally settled in again, and will probably be good for a year or so. Not sure why something that was once comfortable becomes downright aggravating. Well, for me, there's always the contributing factor of my RLS and PLMD. When those are not well controlled, everything irritates the dickens out of me, like my nerves are on edge and I'm hypersensitive.

Has anything identfiable changed for you? New meds? New stressors? Are you sure your treatment is optimized and your brain isn't avoiding sleep? Most likely this will pass on its own, but If it does not, it wouldn't hurt to make sure you haven't developed an overactive thyroid. Have you tried a very small dose of Melatonin to see if helps you go to sleep?

Hope this passes soon.

Kathy

Hi,

This happened to me. I was having increasing irritation with the full face masks that I tried. One night, I just got to the point where I couldn't put up with it any more. I happened to have a different kind of mask handy (from my mask graveyard), and I found something that worked for me.

My first thought here is if you have change the seal on your mask recently? They do get old, and that makes it harder and harder to get a decent seal. Anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months is a typical lifespan.

My treatment isn't optimized, thus the upcoming switch to Vpap.

Brain avoiding sleep? Funny you should mention that, because in my case it's 100% true! I've come to dread going to bed, knowing that all I'm going to be doing is tossing and turning instead of sleeping. I know that's stupid, and I TRY not to think about it, but so far, no luck.

My mask is "comfortable", and doesn't leak, and normally I wouldn't even think about. Now, just the thought of wearing it is annoying.

It's not just the mask. It's everything associated with therapy. Add in the fact that I'm not getting enough sleep and it's making me grumpy to start with, every little thing is annoying me.
