My first night - overall ok, but some problems?
Ok I have tried CPAP before but I gave it up as I was intolerant to pressure.
But my doctor got a new machine, S9, so I thought I would try again.
So last night was my first night where I wore it for longer than 1 hour, 8.5 hours, but only slept probably 6 and a bit hours. Is that normal, to take so long to get to sleep? I think I was just irritible and excited. I can tell im still under done as I feel my eyes are a bit stingy. But my AHI on machine says 1.9 .....
I swallowed a fair bit of air and kept burping, does that go away?
I am still gagging when the pressure hits 10, like I think my body just goes NO, im not going to be forced to breathe. I breathe really shallow normally anyways. Once the pressure gets high I start to mouth breathe and thats when Im swallowing the air. Im a bit concerned that being woken every 10 minutes by this high pressure/gagging will have same affect as waking due to an apnea. Is it a false economy?
Thanks all, I will try to make this my one and only personal thread.

Re: My first night - overall ok, but some problems?
tape the lips and start at the full pressure, relax in bed and breathe deep and slow, sleeping pills can help
australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored
Re: My first night - overall ok, but some problems?
Try using the EPR on fulltime at a level of 3 to make it easier to breath out against the pressure.
Yes its normal to have start up problems.
If you do not know how to change your settings you can download a copy of the clinicians guide (if you don't already have it) here

If you are not comfortable taping your mouth you could use a conventional chin strap. I find that i leak from my mouth when jaw drops open during the night creating a rush of air. The PurSleep PapCap helps support my jaw so that it can not drop open. I do not leak at all.ineedasnooze wrote:thx bob !

yeah thats when mine opens too. i sleep semi prone often too (even though my back says i shouldnt lol).
i think im more concerned over what tape to use, i mean not normal sticky tape i presume bahahahahahahahaha. i presume some kind of medical tape. i can always try it and see. but i have sinus issues so wont do it when thats bad.
if that dont work maybe i look at buying that chin strap bob.
my throat is sore today, but i had my climate control maxed out. also my lips are a bit dry. minor complaints.
i guess i shouldnt expect to feel great yet, but i do feel very sleepy and stingy eyes. give it a couple weeks maybe...

Dear Ineedasnooze,
I read somewhere on the forum a post that said when you go to sleep to position the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth to try to prevent the swallowing air problem. I think that I do this naturally, but not everyone does.
Also, I have heard that people have great success with the papcap from http://www.pur-sleep.com.
Wishing you peaceful, restorative sleep,
Jersey Girl

I'm allergic to tapes (bandaids) I used 3M's micropore surgical (hypallergenic).

Hi,ineedasnooze wrote:so if anyone knows what tape to use please advise.
I use 3M surgical paper tape. It comes in 2 inch wide rolls, and can be found in a drugstore. Many folks use blue painter's tape. Do put something on your lips so the tape doesn't stick to them--it can be difficult and painful to get tape off of your lips.

We're both newbies, but I asked my doctor for Ambien for the beginning and he willingly gave me some, and I'm sleeping like a baby all night long...night 3 coming up. Maybe ask him for some or another drug? I think the part which seems important is being able to relax and let the machine do its job and not fight it.

Re: My first night - overall ok, but some problems?
second night not so good. got 3 hours use. again choked up when it hits 9-10cm. i cant explain the feeling. like i want to breathe normally, but it wants me to breathe so much air, and im a shallow breather. its ok when i just nose breathe. but i have sinus problems. as soon as im opening my mouth whammo. how do i know this as im asleep, i just know ok. lol.
problem last night is i had 4 beers before sleep, and i ate some food just before sleep, as beer makes me hungry. so i was too wary of taping my mouth shut in case i vomit, i have GERD too which i medicate. i also suffer bad sinus probs, dev septum and a polyp that seems to shift sides when i change sides etc. anyway, last night i irrigated them with saline solution. for some reason it always seems to make things worse. i woke up with a headache like, behind my eye, but could tell it was related to my sinus (anyone had that before?). so i think my nose was probably not getting enough of the CPAP through to open my airways so my mouth opened.
any advice appreciated. i dont wanna give up. but i feel more tired today.

Re: My first night - overall ok, but some problems?
ok my figures for first night were similar but i used it for 6 hours.
last night based on the S9 report on the machine
Used: 3.7 hours
Pressure 9.3
Leak: 25l/min (first night was only 2l a min)
Ahi: 0.4
Central ai: 0.2
Is that pressure figure the average pressure?
Ok so my ahi is pretty low. Do you think maybe I should set max really low or try EPR for a few nights until im use to it. Its obvious im leaking a lot. Its like my body does not want to breathe as often as the machine wants me too, ie i breathe shallow and slowly, yet it wants me to breathe deep and often. Strange how the leaks my first night were so low.
So Im thinking maybe tonight, try EPR on 2, try tape my mouth (not entirely) and dont eat a long time before bed?
