Cpap and Acid Reflux

Post by Glenn Maroney » Thu Jun 11, 2009 5:39 am

I have GERD and Acid Reflux so bad that I have been in the floor with stomach acid in my lungs praying to die. I am on several meds for this including Nexium. That being said I also have Sleep aptnia and am on a Cpap machine. Since I have been on the Cpap I have not once had an acid episode. I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

I have had the same experience. I was taking something everyday for acid reflux. Starting therapy for apnea had decreased the acid reflux, along with a big change in my diet and weight loss. On occasion I will have heartburn, but this usually happens when I eat more than I should.

......
Oh yes ! ! !

Sometimes I get heartburn during the day but that is because I eat wrong foods and I won't listen !
VERY, very glad the nighttime heartburn is gone since I'm on cpap. (It's a bargain - and I love bargains)
(too much sugar, salt, chocs, desserts, tea & coffee & dairy products - Oh my, all the food I love ! ! ! - I then help myself with husband's Nexium tablets !?!)
Glenn - is your daytime heartburn also cured? I hope for your sake, that your unpleasant heartburn stays away.
Good day!

Post Nasal Drip

Post by Nibiru2012 » Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:57 pm

Hey:

I realize this is an old thread, but....

I suffer from GERD and this terrible post nasal drip that makes me have sleep apnea, I think. I´ve got it diagnosed, and I wonder if any here have it too (the post nasal drip from GERD).

CPAP treatment is not helping me due to this I think.

Thanks,

John.

You know come to mention it, I used to get Acid Reflux a lot pre-CPAP and I think the only time I've had it on CPAP treatment is when I've really over eaten massively just before bed, e.g. at times like Christmas, otherwise it's all but gone away.

I don't suffer from GERD but I do get a post nasal drip now and again due to actue sinusitis. CPAP hasn't made it better or worse for me.

Fromt he sleep tech and a person who had heartburn-- YES CPAP can take care of acid reflux. Just like everything else in your body that is out of whack from sleep apnea, so is your stomach. This is one of the things we look for along with snoring, daytime fatigue, etc etc. I am off my meds for my heartburn since I started CPAP!!!

Yep, I've been on cpap now for a little over a month and I've had no problem with my Acid Reflux. I'm thinking about stopping the meds after my 2 month anniversary and see what happens.....

It's quite strange, a couple of weeks ago I saw a special on Antacid's and thought, I'll buy a box of those as they always helped reduce indigestion and acid reflux. After getting home I thought "Why on earth did I buy those? I haven't had any for a good 6 months".

It was one of those things 4-5 years ago that I'd purchase every week, it's good that CPAP helps in reducing this

It took me about 3 months on CPAP for the GERD to improve to the point to stop anti acid medicine. I can eat more spices, and does not bother me. Sugar intake is the one that triggers heartburn during the day, but I have to over indulge.

There is actually research to support your observations that CPAP can improve GERD. (Hard to believe, but there is one study I can across that even showed CPAP improved GERD in people who don't have apnea!)
