Hello Harry.

Welcome. We are glad you are here. I'm afraid that I am still a "newbie" myself - began CPAP on Jan 8. My numbers are no where nearly as high as yours, so I would say, yes, CPAP WILL change your life. How have you been feeling? I was feeling extremely fatigued on numbers much lower than yours. So, if you have been experiencing fatigue as I did, you will eventually regain your energy and vitality through cpap. I say eventually, because some of us experience a change with just one night on cpap, and with others it takes much more time. This journey will take some patience on your part, as none of us were born with a mask and hose attached, it does take some getting used to. You may want to take a look at the CPAP Wiki area where it has some info for newbies - including the stages of CPAP - from Denial through Acceptance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here on the forum. I have bee given some wonderful advice from some very caring, knowledgeable folks here.

Wishing you peaceful, restorative sleep,

Jersey Girl

Thank you Jersey Girl for the nice encouraging words!

Yes I am very tired all the time.. I fall asleep at my computer at work, i fall asleep at stop lights. My wife has to drive me every where i go because i can't stay awake. This is a terrible way to live a life. I pray to God that a CPAP machine wakes me up and lets me be a part of the world. Because right now i just feel that things are passing me by.

Oh wow- I assume you qualify as having severe sleep apnea? I'm sorry to hear that

I can't imagine how you must feel- when I was told I had mild sleep apnea I was like THIS... IS... MILD?! *faint*

The guy next to me at the CPAP introduction class I went to had 60 apneas per hour for up to half a minute each time- the sleep data reps were like it's amazing you are alive.

I hope this helps you out- my husband's uncle has severe sleep apnea and lost like 70 lbs after using a cpap. He's a lot less grumpy too lol

That is not uncommon. The medical profession has done a damn sorry job getting people diagnosed before their apnea gets so bad.

Go to this address, wiki/index.php/Sleep_study , and make sure you can answer all the questions under Questions to ask about your PSG and Titration Study before you take delivery of a machine and mask.

Dear Harry,

Your days of falling asleep at stop lights are nearing an end. Yes, I can see that right now you feel as though a truck has been periodically running over you, but the good news is that help is definitely on its way! You are now taking matters into your own hands by participating in a sleep study with a mask and cpap machine. When I went to the sleep center, I was nervous about the mask, since I tend to be a bit claustrphobic. I can't even wear a mask to go scuba diving with. The sleep tech was very nice and told me to just hold the mask (It was a comfort gel nasal mask - a triangle that fit over my nose). I held it up to my face to feel the air and then would take it away and this went on for about 10 minutes until the sleep tech came back. I felt "in control" by holding it up to my face and then taking it away. Those 10 minutes helped me "get to know" the mask a little bit and not be afraid of it. I knew that I could trust the mask to give me air and I also had the power to take off the mask if necessary. That night was the best night's sleep I had in months - it was only 6 hours of real sleep, but for the first time, when I drove home at 6:30 am, I wasn't in the least bit tired!

Some feel it that first night, for others it takes longer, but eventually, you WILL feel more like you again...you know that guy in the mirror from years ago that had lots of energy? He's still in there!

And so, begins your CPAP journey. You may decide that the mask that they used at your sleep study was great and decide to use that one for your therapy, or you may decide to go in search of....the perfect mask for you. It took me 4 masks to find my favorite. I looked at https://www.cpap.com, read loads of reviews on masks, and read up on the forum what lots of people said and then reached out when I had trouble. There are lots of people here to help you. You are NOT alone.

Please, let us know how your study goes with the mask - how your entire experience went.

Warmly,

Jersey Girl

Harry,

Congrats on getting tested.

Your O2 level of 63% is scary bad. Very, very scary bad. I'd almost suggest not attempting to sleep until you can have your sleep study and get on the machine. Perhaps you can call the sleep center and get on the waiting list in case they have any cancellations. Another strategy is to avoid going to bed. Rather, try sleeping upright in an easy chair. Anything to keep that airway open at least a bit so you don't end up in the ozone from lack of oxygen.

Once you get a machine, this will be your new religion. You are going to want to use the machine every single day because you cannot risk hitting these low O2 numbers again. It could cause serious damage, and it could trigger a stroke. We cannot afford to lose you.
