Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
When using a nasal mask, I noticed the other night that as I was falling back asleep, my mouth was so relaxed that air was blubbering out. I had to make a conscious effort to close my mouth. I was only on a pressure of 8 too! Does this happen to you?
Re: Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
YES! Annoying, isn't it? We want to relax and then the very thing that's supposed to be good for us makes our therapy worthless!
You need a chinstrap. I recommend the white one that's a little more expensive (this one: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/deluxe ... hleak.html). I tried a black one that was cheaper, and it did nothing.
Those thinner strips in the picture can be placed wherever it works for you - they're velcro. I don't have the one on the forehead; I use it as extra support under the chin. My DME told me that he sometimes has people put one under the bottom lip to help prevent the mouth from opening. It's up to you and your face/mask as to what way works best for you - try different configurations.
Some people recommend taping the mouth. I'm not in favor of that. Too many cons for me. But, if that method works for you.....
Good luck! I know how frustrating it is. Trust me!

Yes, it happens to me too. I do tape my mouth and this works well for me. I find that the chinstraps don't work to keep my mouth closed. Some people have to us a full face mask because of mouth leaks. You will have to experiment and see what works for you.

Yup. Happens to me all the time. Taping my mouth is not a good option. Moustache and tape don't mix well!
So, I use a Quattro FFM instead.

I went to a chin strap becuase of that. So far i think it is working. No taping for me. I also have a mustache. I have tried the polident strips but for now am just trying to see how it goes without the strips.
John how did you make out with sealing that face mask? Any issues?

Chin straps can work but they are uncomfortable and made my jaw sore. A full face mask was the solution for me.

Re: Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
I used to have this problem a lot when I started 5 years ago but I've managed to condition myself (tell my brain if that's possible) to stop doing it. For the most part it works unless I drink alcohol or over eat and are full, in which case my brain reverts back to it's standard duty of telling me to open my mouth.
Re: Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
I had just a nose mask and I was always breathing through my mouth. I have allergies. I just got a full face mask which I really like, however, from breathing through my mouth I wake up and my mouth is so dry it feels like sandpaper. So I am going to jack up the humidifier and if that doesn't help I guess I will whip out the chin strap that I hate, but if it helps with the sandpaper mouth thing then I will use it.. Got to do what you got to do.. The full face mask rocks! I was pulling the other one off after a couple hours then shutting the alarm off in my sleep so the machine wasnt doing the job it is intended to do..I feel a whole lot more rested now..
Cheers!

Do you have a humidifier with your machine? If not that should help because it will heat the air up and increase the humidity and make it less dry. I find if I have to sleep with a full face mask on without a humidifier you find your mouth very dry when you wake up.
Re: Anyone ever relax so much that your mouth lets air out?
I find that my jaw drops during the night, especially if i am overtired or have been drinking. I use the pap cap chinstrap so that i can continue to use a nasal pillow mask. The papcap is a little more expensive but its made from cotton and lasts a very long time.
