Translate BiPap settings to APap settings

My Dr. wrote the prescription for In: 14-18 and Out: 10-14. What would the proper translation to Apap be? I am working on getting a ResMed S9 Autoset.

I am going to take a guess......but please wait for more experienced users to chime in and see what they say. I just switched from bipap to apap a couple weeks ago, so I am reluctant to start tossing around advice just yet.

That being said.....I would think that your minimum EPAP is 10 and your maximum IPAP is 18, with a Pressure Support of 4.

I'll be interested to see how close I got to understanding that (and see if I was actually able to HELP someone else on the board, instead of always being the one needing help! )

Without more data it is hard but I would at least set the min. for 10 and the max. for 18-20cm. If you have the software check your data - if not you will have to check your LCD.

I get the feeling your doc is also trying to get more data to determine where you should be.

Do you have a copy of your sleep study and titration?

Edit: Melissa is close to what I would do - well right on - 'cept only the bipap has a Pressure Support so you won't see that on your (cpap) Auto.

Rule #1 - ALWAYS write down ALL of the settings before making any changes.
Then make notes as you make additional changes. ALWAYS.

These settings are for an Auto BiPap. They cannot really be translated to an APAP. If this is the way the script was sent to the DME, you should end up with and Auto BiPap.

yes they are bipap settings. The bad news....the s9 bipaps aren't released yet.....not til at least June.

OK so they are BiPap settings. I have been using my ancient Cpap since my last sleep study at its maximum setting of 15 cm/H2O, with no distress. My last sleep study gave me an upper limit of 16 cm/H2O. I am able to tolerate the pressure with no problem so I feel that I chould be able to work with an Apap with some expiratory relief.

What do I need to tell my Dr. to have her write the proper script?

If she wrote it as above - she wants you to have a bipap.

My prescription is for a bipap, but the pressures the sleep lab gave me aren't working (AHI still through the roof). So the DME is giving me a loaner Auto Bipap (?) for two weeks, and then she said she'll use the numbers from that to adjust my Bipap machine. I asked her why I couldn't just keep the auto machine, and she was kinda vague on that. She did say they were more expensive.

I don't know about proper translation of those numbers if you get a ResMed S9 Autoset autopap machine, but if it were me... I'd set the S9 Autoset at minimum pressure 10, maximum pressure 20. For that machine, I'd ask the doctor to write the Rx this way:

ResMed S9 Autoset 10-20 cm H2O
heated humidifier and heated tube
