Newbie w water in my mask and tube

Post by r2da2 » Tue Mar 02, 2010 6:06 am

I'm just now on my 3rd night w/ my CPAP machine.

I'm currently using a Resmed S8 Elite II w/ H4i Heated Humidifier and a Resmed Mirage Soft gel Medium mask. I also have the rescan software but haven't really installed or downloaded data yet. My pressure is at 7 cm H20, with a ramp of 20 minutes as prescribed by the doctor.

Ever since I've used my CPAP, I've stopped having headaches when I wake up in the morning and I generally feel well rested. Thank god it's working!

However, I keep on waking up in the middle of night as I feel water in my mask or in my tube. I have tried to adjust the heater by lowering it from setting III to II, but I still get some back splash. I'll be lowering the heater level again to setting I tonight to try to remedy the situation. I'm just wondering if other people have encountered the same problem and what exactly did they do to remedy it?

By the way, I live in the Philippines, so the weather is pretty humid, but I sleep in an airconditioned room.

Also, in the morning, for a brief few minutes when I wake up, I find myself coughing uncontrollably. It's a minor nuisance, but at least my headaches have stopped

Greetings and welcome to the forum! You might want to register and then register your equipment. Here are some instructions on how to do that:

We're glad the CPAP is helping. Sorry you are experiencing "rainout". There are lots of options to solve that. First, you can try to turn down your humidifier. If you need the moisture, then you can consider purchasing a hose cover. PadACheek.com provides an excellent selection. Or you might make a cover. Some folks have used simple things such as cut up tube socks to cover the hose. Or you can route the hose under any bed cover you might have.

The coughing could either be due to deeper breathing or some moisture heading down into your lungs. Many of us find that with CPAP therapy we actually have healthier lungs and sinuses. Essentially since our airways are open our bodies work better than they have in a long time. Hopefully you will adjust to the increased pressure and deeper breathing fairly quickly.

Again welcome. And hope this helps.

Put your machine lower than your bed, that way water can drain back.

Had the same problem my first night. I will have to find something to set the machine on lower to the ground for tonight.

Having just got my machine, I've been experimenting with the humidity settings. Couple of tidbits I've learned from here and other sites, I had the wive make me a cover out of a fleece blanket we had, and I installed a hook on the wall above my head, and suspended the hose from it with a rubber band, and it seems to have helped a lot, both humidity and comfort by not getting wrapped in the hose.

Get an Aussie Heated Hose! I can't live without mine and I don't even use a humidifier. They are a million times better than any hose cover could even dream of being.

They ship from Australia, and so it can take a bit longer to receive. I've ordered 3 from them, great service.

Thanks for all your replies. Now I know what rainout means...

Will adjust my humidifier settings, cover the hose and lower the machine then.
