Comfort Gel Full Face

Post by melissa1974 » Thu Feb 25, 2010 1:17 pm

Hello-
Does anyone out there use the Comfort Gel Full Face mask, and if so, do you have any tips on how to prevent leaks? When I called my DME to discuss the trouble I was having with leaks with the Liberty and the Quattro, she suggested giving the Comfort Gel a try. I tried it last night and had a tough time with leaks that woke me up, although strangely enough, my leak rate on my machine was better than it has been for several nights????

I was particularly disturbed by leaks near the corners of my eyes early in the night and then as the night went on and I moved around, I began to get leaks around the sides of the masks, on my cheeks. I read the instructions carefully and believe that I adjusted it correctly...not too tight, and used the "stabilizer" as instructed. However, the leaks were annoying.

Any succesful users with tips would be most appreciated as I continue to search for "my mask".....

Thanks!
Melissa

Hello Melissa

I cannot help you with the Comfort Gel Mask, but I have used the LIberty when I first started therapy on November 20th, 2009. We have the same machine (it's wonderful by the way) the Liberty just didn't cut it my pressure is 19cm/15cm. I have tried several full face mask lately, the Quartto really worked great at first, now I have leak issues and have no idea why. I clean the mask daily and nothing has changed since I started with the mask but for some reason it just started to leak bad. All other full face gave me leak issues from the onset, the Fisher Paykel Forma very comfortable but leaks, Respironics Full Life didn't even get out of the gate is was so bad with leaks but again comfortable. The one that works for me now and still going strong is the ResMed Activa LT nasal mask somehow I'm keeping my mouth closed and it's working and comfortable. Being that I get congested at times I am still looking for a full face mask and will try the Hans Rudolph V2 7600 I hope this works I want to have a backup for those congested nights. Melissa try the ResMed Activa LT if you can, I think it might work for you I know it's not a full face but somehow you learn to keep you mouth closed. I will report back on the V2 once I try it..

Good Luck and The Best to you
Happy Sleeping
John Sevcik

The comfort gel ff was the first mask I tried. I didn't like it, but some do. I had issues with it leaving marks on the bridge of my nose. It also felt "sweaty" to me.

I still have my Liberty but I also got a Swift FX (even though I believe I am a mouth breather) and I tried it last night and my AHI went way down and I got through the whole night. So I am going to try to see if I can make this work because it is a lot less intrusive than a ff mask. I never thought I could do it, but I had no leaks and lower AHI. I have a pretty low pressure though.

Use these.

I slept from 9 last night till 4 am....helped a lot on my 2nd night.

I did use some Lanolin lotion on the mask and my face...plus the seal..did a good job.

Wow.....I have really wanted to try just a nasal mask, or just nasal pillows like the Activa or the Swift, but with my high pressures I wasn't sure if it was possible. My pressures are 17/12 and I thought that those masks wouldn't work for me. I am absolutely ok with taping my mouth shut, or using Polident, so that is not a problem for me. Hmmm....now I want to try one of them right away!!

I am starting to wonder if my DME is going to think I am crazy for trying so many different masks......

Still would love to hear some success stories about the Comfort Gel though...

A nasal mask that covers my nose, the comfortgel for example, seals very well on me...The issue is keeping my mouth closed.

My pressure is 18.

I have to use a chin strap and tape, which I dont like at all.

I had some success from un-Comfort Gel FF. The problem is like you said you have to keep it not tight nor loose, then the silicone sticks to your face. That is my problem, I have an oily face and the edge of the silicone keeping the seal burned my face leaving a mark in my face.

The mask was not tight, so no marks form the mask just the edge of the silicone around my nose and mouth.

To avoid that I tight the mask and then the leaks started.

I have abandoned the idea of a full face for me, too many attempts with so many problems.

You mention before with the liberty that you didn't have aproblem with the pillows, why not trying nasal pillow mask and taping. I use the Opus 360 and it is great for me.

The ResMed SoftGel Nasal that I've been using is rated according to the documentation up to 20. I've been using it at 11 just fine, with only 1 night in the past 2 months with a large leak.

Most nasal pillows are rated up to 20, but when you get in the high end of the range, you can have issues, but I remember reading folks who had similar numbers to yours and were using nasal pillows.

I think you would have better luck (from what I've read) with a nasal mask (assuming you don't do much mouth breathing).

Good luck!

My pressure is 6 now, so i can't answer about the Swift FX (or other nasal/nasal pillow masks) at high pressure, but i'm sure others have experience with that and I am pretty sure it is done all the time.

My husband said I started to part my lips some every now and then (I asked him to watch me) but quickly closed them again. My AHI went down and I felt better this morning and had no dry mouth.

I would say go for it and who cares what your DME thinks....finding a mask you like is SO important!

The ResMed softgel is personally the best nasal mask. It is heavy but small so it is not uncomfortable. Its own weight makes it to stay in place with no need to tight the straps. I sleep on my sides so it works really well. It is my second option, first the Opus then the softgel.
