Does this happen to you ???

Post by Britishbulldog » Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:29 pm

This has happened to me a few times since being on therapy waking up or knowing that a apnoea is occuring . Last night this happened again to me its scary but kinda funny really i was sort of semi asleep lying in the worst position on my back i know i was breathing through my nose but it seemed like the air wasnt going down my throat next minute im thinking in my head "shit" im not breathing properly then the s8 cuts in with a surge of pressure .

Does anybody else have these feelings or am i just the only one to feel this ???

Also ive noticed when dropping off to sleep my breathing getting shallower and shallower then stopping .

Also head-aches have been a problem the last week but could be stress related .

Regards,

It probably has a lot to due to the way the machine is configured. If you're using it in Auto mode (range of pressures), that would probably be logical for it to do that. If you don't want it to do that, switch it to CPAP mode at a fixed pressure.

If you're using EPR, the S8 only lets you exhale for 10 seconds. If 10 seconds are up, and you haven't switched to inhalation, the S8 (both automatic and fixed pressure machines) will cancel the EPR and bring in the full force inhalation pressure.

Ozij-
Thanks for clarifying that! I sometimes feel like I am being "rushed" to take my next breath as I am falling asleep. That explains why.

This might be related to the settling feature on the S8 which is under the clinical menu if i remember. With this feature you can set a time limit so after hitting start the unit will not do anything until after a preset time, mine is set to 30 mins after which i am normally asleep, if not i hit stop and start.

Hi ,

Many thanks for your replies ,
I have the settling feature turned off on the machine so it goes straight into apap mode when hitting the pillow.

Here in the UK we are monitored by Sleep clinics under our National Health Service which basically means you are sent to the consultant and polysomnograph test arranged then you get the diagnosis ,in my case it was before the NHS supplied the machine for free so i purchased my gear from Resmed . After this we have a yearly check up at the hospital where they just ask how you are doing etc ,do you feel sleepy etc about 10 minutes if your lucky .

So your left with the situation do you wait for the next yearly NHS appointment or do you pay Resmed for a private consultation which is around £50

Thanks again ,

Is the Resmed appointment a qualified doctor? And is it just Resmed or can you choose other manufacturers?

And who did you have to shag to get an AutoSet on the NHS? I thought they only handed out basic CPAP machines and without humidifiers, if you are lucky to get one at all.

Uncle Bob,

I bought the gear myself from Resmed UK .
The NHS here is a postcode lottery some places get S8 auto set machines others get basic cpap machines and some places you go on a waiting list for years !!!!

We have the N.I.C.E guidelines that cpap is the gold standard treatment for osa but the health authorities are not obliged to adhere to this.

Once you have your diagnosis of osa you can buy a machine from any manufacturer on the viewing of a doctors pre-scription .
You will not see a doctor at Resmed just a rep

Sleep apnea occurs when the body stops lungs during sleep. The primary symptoms of sleep apnea are chronic snoring and daytime sleepiness.
