CPAP Pro Mask

Post by howkim » Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:31 pm

My sleep doc was very impressed with the differences in the leak rates between the two masks I had graphs for. The F&P 431 did not fare well. The one with the better rate was the Activa Nasal Mask - but I have to do something about mouth breathing. Can't tape for many days in a row as I'm allergic to adhesives - ALL adhesives. Denture stuff doesn't work for me. Chin straps hold my jaws closed, but I still blow out air. He suggested trying the CPAP Pro. I read the reviews on cpap.com, and am a bit concerned, as I'm predominantly a slide sleeper. I really don't want the bite-plate to move my teeth around.

I'd appreciate any comments, experiences, ideas, etc., that anyone would like to share.

Here is an email exchange I had with a friend this weekend.
- "Have you seen this?"

- "In my opinon, it is like putting your mask headgear in your mouth instead of on your head. Doesn't make sense to me. I can't imagine holding a boil 'n bite mouthpiece in my mouth all night long while it is connected to a CPAP hose and nasal pillows.
From reading the forums, it looks like less that one of a thousand who order one can tolerate it in their mouth long term. They go back to traditional masks or give up altogether. Let me know if you try one."

- "As I viewed the piece and 2 noticed it is held in your mouth, I thought this would be a problem. I don’t like having to depend upon this manner of having it secured. I have used the nasal pillows for a long time and guess I will continue to do such. "

- "Those guys are sneaky with the photos. Their poses are such that it is hard to notice the device is attached to a mouthpiece. "

Hello! There are a lot of posts on this mask if you do a search. I tried it, but could not stand the torque on my teeth. I also thought the plastic part that stays between your lips was too thick and I'm not sure I could have gotten used to that even if the teeth torque didn't bug me. I am a side and back sleeper.

There are several people on this forum that do love it, though!

I'm also not a fan of nasal pillows, although I didn't know that back then, this was one of the first masks that I tried. If you like nasal pillows, the CPAP Pro is far more adjustable than other other pillow system I tried and I liked it the best as far as that goes.

Hi, FG, thanks for the suggestion. The only post I found in my search was mine.

Plus I didn't find the search function very accessible. And I search websites, etc., a LOT as part of my job.

Try searching using CPAPPRO (all one word, no spaces). You should get a couple hundred hits.

I LOOOOOOVE mine. No leaks at all. The mouthpiece is designed in such a way that mouth breathing is rare. It IS a high maintenance mask! You DO need to make a good impression into the mouthpiece...for some? It takes practice. By far the most comfortable. Interesting that they are spending a TON on TV ads...nobody else is. They really believe in their product. Ingenius design.

Interesting. In your equipment profile you also show a SleepWeaver nasal mask. Do you mouthbreathe when using that mask?

I am just wondering if the CPAPPRO mask will stay in position in users whose jaw slackens during mouthbreathing.

I just bought some mouth-guards, like I would have used for football. I am going to try it with a chin strap and see if my mouth stays closed tonight. I dont like tapping at all.

I use both the cloth and Pro. I don't mouth breathe with either. The SleepWeaver slightly pushes against your upper lip (blows up) and seems to help keep your mouth closed. The Pro is designed in such a way as to have an "L" ( ledge ) design (one zigzag) in the clear plastic piece that holds the outside hardware to the mouthpiece. My tongue "fits" into it. Even when relaxed, it works. I also notice that with more pressure each of these mask works better...especially the SleepWeaver. I run pressures of 9 to 11. I use my Quattro for afternoon naps. I use the Sleepweaver to dream like crazy and the Pro when the SleepWeaver gets a little too wet after about 5 hours of straight sleep (not always though). The Pro still has that anti-histamine response that I talked about due to the pillows. It's getting much much better though.

This contraption is torture! My jaws are absolutely killing me!! It's way worse than the regular nasal pillows and headgear I am returning to!!! Maybe if you have a huge mouth it could be OK, but.............. I don't recommend it. It feels like your mouth is overflowing with equipment. I can hardly get my lips around it!! YUCKY!

megablesst02, I'm sorry your having an unpleasant experience with CPAP PRO. With any mask I've used, it takes a while to relax and become used to it. I've got a small mouth too!!

For me, using the PapCap with the CPAP Pro, both are snug and I don't even think about the 'Boil and Bite'. The only point of contact I'm aware of are the nasal pillows. With the hose going threw the PapCap, the nasal pillows and 'Boil and Bite' stay static. Sometimes the nasal pillows will drop a little and cause a slight leak or the PapCap strap is not tight enough and small amounts of air will escape. But, my encore reports don't show increased Apnea with these small leaks.

Matter of fact, my AHI is in the .1 to .2 range consistently. I use the CPAP Pro 95% of the time....

Sometimes it takes more than once to get the 'Boil and Bite' set correctly. Is it loose, uncomfortable?? Also, in the instructions, the manufacturer states it takes a while to get used to the CPAP PRO. It's worth it!!! Without the PapCap, I wouldn't be using it today. The PapCap makes the difference for me

Good luck!!!

SG
