Is one machine better than another?

Post by Rod » Mon Oct 10, 2005 6:26 pm

I always said I was a light sleeper. Then It got worse and in the afternoon while driving home I almost went off the road.I was very tired in the afternoons. I went to the Doctor and then had a sleep study done. They found my respiratory disturbance index= 43 respiratory events per hour of NREM sleep and 70 events per hour of REM sleep, which produced severe sleep fragmentation, and severe loss of oxygen down to 80%.My wife witnessed me to stop breathing and snoring. I was sent for another sleep study to sleep with the CPAP. I go back Wednesday for the results and to get the machine I think? I was given the mask which says Comfort Classic on it.My question is : is there one machine that is better to get, or stay away from? I dont know which will be offered, but my insurance should cover it.I have read some of the forum and know to ask for the humidifier. Is the humidifier and machine one unit or seperate?Any answers would be helpful befoe I see the Doctor on Wednesday. Thank you, Rod.

Rod, there are some real experts here. I went through the same thing you are, but I found out later. I believe it depends on your personal style. If you like messing with software and want to be active in your theraphy, I would recommend a machine that uses a smartcard and software such as the respironics auto or pro II. The auto is more sophisticated, it actually titrates you nightly depending on your need. It is more expensive however. The respironics plus with cfex is also excellent, it uses a static setting based on what the sleep study recommends. Some people don't want to mess with there theraphy, others do.

Welcom, Rod.
Keep on reading, look especially for the posts by WillSucceed and rested gal, who summarize the pro and cons of the various machines in ways I can't even attemp to start.
