A Couple S8 AutoSet II with H4i Questions

Post by AirBreather » Sat Jan 16, 2010 4:44 pm

I am a long-time CPAP user who switched from a Respironics CPAP with C-Flex to a Resmed S8 AutoSet II with an H4i Heated Humidifier about a month ago and I have some questions.
  • I often have to press the right control key several times to initiate the humidifier warm-up mode. The problem doesn't seem to be due to a defective control key, because the key works reliably for menu selection. Also, the problem doesn’t seem to be due to a defective H4i Humidifier, because the humidifier always starts heating when treatment starts if the warm-up mode hasn't been selected. Have any of you had that problem?
  • The pressure shown each morning in the "Patients Menu" is lower than the pressure shown in the "Clinical Menu." It appears that the "Patients Menu" pressure might be the pressure when treatment ended or a median session value rather than the daily 95th centile value reported in the clinical menu. However, the Resmed documentation seems to indicate that both are daily 95th centile values. Do any of you know why the daily pressure values are different in the two menus?

As for the first question, i have the same with my machine,an s8 auto vantage, the reason on mine i have to push the power button about twice to get it going each night i think is because i unplug it after i write down my stats from the menu as it always sounds as if the blower is still running inside very slow and i am gone for at least 15 hours each day and i dont want more wear from it just setting there running as it has 3700 hours on it already

As to your second question,i have no idea,i always write the stats from the clinical menu in my sleep log, i am a trucker,so i try to keep compliance data reports.

Thanks for your reply.

I think the blower is kept running slowly after therapy ends to help dry the air circuit, reduce mold growth, and reduce the chance that moisture will damage internal electronic devices. I can understand your concern about letting the blower continue to run while you are gone, but except for whatever fire risk there might be, I think it would be best to let it run.

If you press the button too fast (to start the warmer), the machine done't register the press. Press & hold for a full second or so. I log the numbers from the user menu not the Clinical menu, have no idea why there's a difference (now ya made me wonder if mine shows a diff...).

The same problem occurs regardless of how long I press the key. Sometimes going into and then out of one of the menus seems to clear the problem and make a subsequent warm-up selection work, but that doesn't always work either.

Wow, I never thought of that. I turn off my machine when I get up in the morning and leave it off until bedtime. Do most of you leave your machines on all day?

The blower on the ResMed autoset is supposed to run after you stop it... it runs for 1 hour, not all day. You should let it run as it dries out the humidifier and cools it down. My DME told me about this feature... it sounds like a lot of them don't know or don't tell people about this and other features on their machines.

No.... don't leave the full pressure running... that is not what was meant. You should just let the machine do its own hour blower cycle. It starts this after you shut off the cpap pressure.

Yeah, I understood what you meant, but thanks for the clarification anyways! I learned something new from you, and will follow your advice. Thanks! You definitely did your good-deed-for-the-day!

FINALLY! A QUESTION I KNOW THE ANSWER TO!!!!

The Clinical Menu shows you the actual pressure you're using
The Patients Menu shows you the pressure minus the EPR.

The Patient Menu "sort of" averages out the pressure reading, and willl be around 2 points ( + or - ) lower than the Clinical Menu. Don't let that number fool you, you are still getting the full pressure set on the Clinical Menu. If you want both #'s to sync up, turn off your EPR, and they'll both show the same pressure.

That is very interesting. Where did you learn that? I haven't been able to find anything about that in the Resmed S8 AutoSet II Provider Manual, Clinical Manual, or User Guide.

I have EPR set to 1. My daily Patient Menu indicated pressure tends to be approximately, but not exactly, 1 cm H2O lower than the pressure shown in the Clinical Menu, which is consistent with your explanation.

Thanks taking time to provide your answer.

I posed the same question (more or less) on this forum a short while ago, and that was the answer I got.

To be 100% honest, I wasn't sure that was the correct answer at the time, so I turned off my EPR for a night, and sure enough the numbers synced up!

Komodo, how cool!

If I ever read that, I'd forgotten it.
Glad you knew the answer.

Can someone please point me to where I can find the clinician, user, etc. manuals for my ResMed S8 Autoset II and Escape II? I would be eternally grateful. Please PM or Email me. Thanks very very much.
