Machine Results vs Resscan

Post by Swim_Bike_Run » Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:48 am

I checked my machine and saw the following results this morning:

AHI: 2.1
AI: 0.0
HI: 2.1
Leak: 0.22 L/s

Pressure: 5.5

How does that correlate with the chart below? I know HI is the Hypopnea Index - is the number from the machine (2.1) the average per hour perhaps? I started the night off with my Swift LT II but I am having too many issues with the nasal pillows. Put the Softgel on and went right to sleep. I think that one is a keeper.

How do I get my HI down a bit more?

You may be able to, may not.......

Remember ResMed is very aggressive in scoring HI's--it appears to be the opinion of those with more knowledge, that mentally you can divide a ResMed HI number in half for comparison to other programs or machines........so that is one way to decrease the HI number, but I know that's not what you were looking for.....

Personally I've never seen a zero for AI...so I'm jealous! Your numbers are good! AHI below 5; leaks below 0.4 L/sec, and you can breathe with only 5.5 pressure.

The bigger picture than these numbers is "How do you feel?"

When you are in ResScan, click on Reports for the same day, and you will get the statistics, which will correlate with your lcd screen, except that leaks are per minute in the report and per second on the lcd.

Your AHI numbers look very good--AI 0 is perfection, and I think a goal of 0 HI may be unrealistic, in that our breathing patterns when awake and asleep are not perfectly synchronized.

Although your leaks are below the .4 l/s threshold, you could still improve there, and probably will do so, as you get used to all the gear. However, looking at your graph, your high leaks seem to be when your pressure drops, so are you taking off the mask then? In which case, the graph tells you more about the leak situation than the average l/s.

I just want to point out that you can set ResScan to report in either L/sec or L/min. I changed mine to L/sec so that it corresponds to the xPAP machine's LCD screen. To change the leak reporting, go to Tools, Options, then Graphs. You can also choose between 24-hour time or AM/PM and a few other settings there. The changes will be made globally, throughout the program.

The number the LCD reports is the median, not the average. ResMed claims that the median is more Robust than the mean.

In my opinion and experience reporting the mode can make the therapy look more effective than it is. Perhaps it can also make it appear less effective, but that has not been my experience as of yet. I am not a statistician, but grudgingly have taken both undergraduate and graduate statistics courses because in order to get my pieces of paper.

In a distribution of results, the mode is the number that occurs most often, the median is the midpoint, and the mean is the average. I am quoting John B. Fisher when I say (who is paraphrasing basic stats) “the median is almost meaningless by itself and mean is worthless if we don't know the range of variance.”

I am also jealous of your results.

I suspect there are many things about that program that I haven't discovered yet! I keep finding new things all the time.

Thanks for all the replies..they are greatly appreciated. It is hard for me to judge how I feel. I think I am coming down with a cold but unfortunately I really cannot take anything for it since I am on Coumadin. I'm on Coumadin as I got 6 blood clots from shoulder surgery back in August. I am also taking a heavy antibiotic for an abcessed tooth/root canal from a few days ago. So I think I feel a little more rested, but I in NO way feel refreshed or energized. I have not felt that way for 6+ months. Hopefully it will come back soon. I do really like the softgel mask and my buckwheat pillow will be here today....

Thanks again

Brian

Darn Ice in Atlanta! UPS delayed my Regenesis Pillow until Monday! Crickey!!!

Ok, another question, would it be worth it to pony it up a couple hundred bucks for an overnight pulse oximeter? I have the single finger model for my PE and I only paid $60 from amazon and like it alot. It allows me to pop it on my finger during the day and see my O2 level and HR. Considering I have Pulmonary Embolism, I find it useful. I would love to be able to use it once a week or so at night to see how my CPAP therapy is going. Just curious as whether is is considered useful or overkill. I do know that they are battery suckers so I figure I would only use it sparingly. I like gadgets but could always use a new Garmin to train with if the Pulse Oximeter is not really that useful.

Thanks all!

Brian

Scrapper my pup is the best! He are a couple pics...first is at 6 weeks - he was 42 lbs! Second was 9 months and 110lbs. Now he is 5 years old and 230 lbs. He does love to ride in the car. One note...the Garmin I was referring to was one I wear on my wrist for triathlons...not the car!
