If Quattro hurt your nose, what FF mask DID work for you?

Post by SleepingUgly » Tue Jan 05, 2010 8:44 am

I'd love to hear from people who had difficulties with the Quattro hurting the bridge of their nose, and found another full face mask that DID not. If so, which one was it? Thanks!!

My husband could not use the Q for that reason plus leak issues but the UltraMirageFF is fine once adjustments are made.

My favorite FFM is FlexiFit 431A. It allows you to place your chin in it giving you a better anchor point plus its probably the lightest FFM out there. Have never had a problem with it hurting my nose.

Rjjayrt, did you ever try the Quattro? Is the FlexiFit you have the one with the foam or not? My DME has the one with the foam and he says they do not have good luck with it.

SleepingUgly: The FlexiFit 431 does not have the foam just the three cushion sizes in the box: Small, Medium and Large. The FlexiFit 432 has the foam and one size cushion in the box.

I have tried the quattro and did not like it, it was heavy, and I could not overcome the leak problem that this mask has historically had. I know ResMed has said that they have redesigned it, but I don't think it helped, just a personal opinion. No the 431A does not have the cushion, I have tried the 432 with the cushion but I didn't find it as comfortable as the 431A

What is the 'A' in '431A'? I don't see the A on the cpap.com website next to the masks, just HC431.

Just found my notes from my conversation with me DME. They have the 432 and he said that he does not recommend it, it doesn't seal very well, and most everyone complains of it leaking. If that is his experience with the 432, can I expect different results with the 431?

I use the Quattro right now and the nose problem is easily fixed for me with a piece of cushion waterproof tape on the bridge of nose. Last night I forgot it somehow and although not sore this morning there is a bright red spot that is not going away. It is the first night I forgot to tape in 6 weeks. I have a 431 on order and should have it in a few days. I will post back here after a night using it. I have the Ultra Mirage and find it worse than the Quattro in comfort and it is much noisier. I had to "fine tune" the exhaust holes to get it to stop singing just to fall asleep.

Don't know what the A stands for, its listed on the box the mask came in and its order # is listed as HC431A. I've never had a problem with the 431 sealing, I'm sure there are those who have.

Last night I used the cushioned tape with the Remzzzs and my size Medium Quattro. Today I have a bright red mark on my nose that hurts. The previous couple of nights I was using the cushioned tape with the Remzzzs and my size Large Quattro and I had red marks, but not painful. However, the Remzzzs (maybe because I used it a couple of times?) was causing the size Large to slip a bit in the chin, so I switched to the Medium. The Large is really too large for me, I think, but I like that it hits higher on the nose bridge and without the Remzzzs it seems to seal on my chin (very low down). The Remzzzs really helps with the sealing problem in general, but I'm too afraid to use it alone to see how it would work on the nose bridge. My logic is that if WITH the tape it causes a red mark, it would be worse without, but maybe the inverse is true and the tape is just causing additional pressure. BTW, I had equivalent results when I used the Transpore tape, which is thinner than the cushioned tape.

What other FF masks did you try besides the Quattro and Ultra Mirage?

Please DO post when you have worn the 431. I am considering ordering it, but would like to hear what you have to say (even though it seems your nose issue is more easily resolved than mine...I have tried lots of different kinds of tape, and even Duoderm, to no avail...).

I had a medium Quattro fitted at the DME that i had to tighten so much at the top that my nose got sore. I also i noticed that the bottom of the mask would push my mouth open during the night and i would suffer from dry mouth.

Once i checked the fitting templates I found that i had the wrong size and I was actually a size small.

I think technically I should be in a Medium. (According to cpap.com's guide where you put the measurements in, NO full face mask suits me!) I think I have a difficult head to fit. I actually have a small head, believe it or not, but my face is long and narrow/thin. Eyes are close and deep set. My nose is prominent... And I'd like to change my name from Sleeping Ugly, because I'm not feeling very attractive with this description!

Sleeping,
Of the other 2 FFM's I tried one was the Hybrid, (not Liberty, the other), and the other was a no name one from my DME I have not seen anywhere else. I do not have the packaging and it does not have the name on it. It is fairly small for a FFM, all clear, and no nosebridge, which is why I tried it. It fit in the DME's office ( they all do), but at home it is among my worst for leaks. It was quite expensive, but that may have been the DME. Sorry I cannot find the name but I have never seen it anywhere else. I have also used the Swift LT and Comfortgel nasal. They both work for me if I want to wash, shave, use Afrin, doubletape, and a chinstrap, all before putting on the mask. That and the machine noise helped me choose the Darth Vader avatar.
I know part of the reason the Quatrro gives me poor numbers is my jaw drops and causes leaks. It must be that as it seems to seal well but always wake with poor leak rates. If I have to use chinstrap I may as well use a nasal or pillows. I am hoping the 431 solves all that but.......I always hope the next lask will sove everything and it rarely does. I am on mask # 6 going on 7, all out of pocket.

I tried the Full Life. It has a kind of a chin strap, but not sure it would actually work as a chin strap in terms of keeping your jaw from dropping. I tried it when I was naive and used NOTHING on the bridge of my nose. I woke up after a few hours with a very red mark, and by the end of the day I was the poster child for zit cream (I never knew so many pimples could fit in such a small area--it was a true feat of nature). I should try it again (but I'm too scared).

I tried on the Fit Life, a total face mask, and I actually kind of liked it. It was great not to have anything in or on my nose. But I tried it in a sleep lab and they said I was leaking too much. Someone with a wider face than I have might really like it. I wonder if it would solve your jaw drop problem or if you'd break through the seal on that too. I was told the other total face mask actually goes under the chin. That might be a good option for you if the 431 doesn't work. But I hope it does. Keep me posted, please.
