First of all, this seems to be a flame-free thread. Feels good.

Another thing that points to it being more about making money (which I generally favor) versus avoiding liability is the fact that the manufactures could easily have a relatively open data format, which would allow us to import data from our own cards into our own spreadsheet or other analysis software. The fact that they do not provide that implies that they want to control customer access to their product -- a practice of which I disapprove.

There is something seriously wrong with the following:
  1. I want you to pay me $100 to access your data
  2. You can only export your data with the $250 version of the software
  3. I will not sell you the $250 version of the software
Darn it, it's my data.

Not really. I'm just a cheapskate.
Just my opinion, but I don't think ins. should cover software and card readers.
I think I disagree with you there. Sleep Apnea seems to be a day-to-day data intensive illness, the treatment of which can be greatly enhanced by access to both day-to-day and trend information.

Since computers are pretty darned ubiquitous at this point, it seems reasonable to facilitate their use in treatment, especially for something like this that occurs in the home.
