OT: Severe rib pain

Post by Jaylee » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:09 am

I have had "the cough". Every teacher gets it. That nasty cough that seems to last no less than 2 months.

Ironically enough, I only coughed maybe 10 times yesterday. Hardly anything that warrented medicine for. But I did cough hard enough to hurt a muscle deep down. The nurse told me to use an ace bandage to wrap myself up with and to take advil. I am doing that but the pain is still pretty bad. Any other tips out there to try? I am on cough medicine now because the doc says if I keep myself from coughing it will allow it to heal, but man it even hurts to laugh. And I laugh a lot so I am bummed

good morning

I have one question.
Did they xray your ribs?

I have broke a rib by coughing. It is very possible to break one this way.

I hope you feel better soon.

This also happened to me and I can tell you it is very, very painful! It takes time to heal but in the meantime try some ointment - something like Arnica perhaps. Ask your pharmacist. Yes, that coughing makes it worse. Keep a glass of water near you and when you feel like coughing have some water. Get well soon

It can also be your diaphragm muscle - I had that when I was pregnant and dear daughter kicked me. It also hurts like the dickens to breath with.

Either issue you need to wear a bandage and not cough.

Try breathing steam with eucalyptus.

if the cough is from talking all the time it may help to relax the muscles and talk in a more relaxed way, a beta blocker med may help for a while as it relaxes the body, you may be in the habit of being too tense, take deep slow breaths and have frequent stretches

I feel 100% better today. I have had to sleep on my back for three nights- even though it is a problem for my apnea but I could not bear to be on my side and my hose is not long enough for the left side. I am thinking about moving my machine maybe to the opposite side of the bed or seeing about getting a hose extender, I think I heard someone here mention those before. The 6 feet is not long enough for me.

I am only coughing when I go outside in to the cold now. Otherwise it has stopped so long as I stay nice and warm
