Sleep Apnea is Good for Your Health and Extends Your Life

Post by roster » Tue Dec 08, 2009 11:29 am

One theory is that the constant breaks in oxygen and blood supply to organs, caused by the pauses in the breathing, somehow strengthen the heart and brain; this means that if a heart attack or a stroke occurs, the body is better able to deal with it.

I have a vision that we will figure out an easy way to ensure that children develop wide, deep, healthy and attractive jaws and then obstructive sleep apnea becomes an obscure bit of history.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ycw4uaX ... re=related

Is that like "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger"?

So much not said in that "news" flash. I'd be interested in a comparison of the same population of health measures in addition to longevity. If I'd managed to survive untreated apnea till age 65, which I seriously doubt, it would not have been a life worth living. Also, OSA is not a death sentence, but increases risk factors. I don't think anyone has said if you don't treat it you will surely die. I wonder if this "study" is weighted in that many of those who were going to die either directly or indirectly from OSA were already out of the pool of people available to be followed?

That is an Israeli study quoted in the Daily Mail, and an earlier Israeli study cited at http://www.innovations-report.com/html/ ... 11707.html provides the probable explanation:
Male patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- the inability to breathe properly during sleep -- produce lower levels of testosterone, resulting in decreased libido and sexual activity, according to researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
Men with decreased libido avoid beatings with a nine iron and all manner of other threats to life that follow from chasing women. It's no wonder the apnea sufferers live longer.

Hmm. It occurs to me that quadriplegics are less likely to wreck automobiles.

Perhaps the Daily Mail should check whether there are any Israeli studies on that.

Feh.

I am sure Rooster is unaware that the Daily Mail is a tabloid of the Rupert Murdoch variety of journalism.

Hi All

Two things to consider -

1. The Daily Mail is not interested in the truth, only what suits their agenda

2. The Israeli's are not interested in the truth, only what suits their agenda

Given the combination of those sources I will not be throwing away my machine any time soon.

Actually there is validity to this article...there was another article I read that the body does adapt to the apneas. How else would you explain over 90% of the 18 million people still going undiagnosed..... Looking back I've had my condition for over 20 years and I'm in great shape for an early 50 year old. My blood work and stress test and working out with 20 year olds validate this. However I do have a mild case of AFIB which in retropect was always there but it never bothered me. What I don't understand about my sleep study my sleep study my sleep efficiency was 90 % with an AHI of 57 with half being hypopneas over a 7 hour period.
Maybe exercise is the key which I have been doing since I was a kid!

Hey, nothing against anyone who is a quadraplegic or blind but if a blind person can legally get a firearms owners ID card and a hunting license in many states why can't a quadraplegic?

I wonder if their are any articles out there on this?
