Thanks to all for keeping this thread going and of course Lori for initiating the discussion. This may be saving some of us money and heartache.

I LOL every time I read about the different "gerry-rigging" that goes on - you guys are too creative!

OSR,

No thanks necessary. And how are you doing, my friend? What interface have you been using and how successful has it been? We have not heard from you in a bit. I hope that isn't a bad thing. Maybe you're doing so well that you have been so energetic and just too busy to sit down at your computer? Please let us all know what's going on with you. Hope you're well.

Second night with Aura

Post by ProfessorSleep » Sat Oct 01, 2005 8:18 am

As promised, the latest update on the Aura - not that you all are *that* interested, just that I still need some help! However, on the bright side, I think this might be the start of a long term relationship. I did major adjusting and it worked quite well. The good points: it didn't move all night, no leaks, could hardly tell iI was wearing it, could hardly tell I was wearing it, could hardly tell I was wearing it, did I say... ? Very, very comfy. The grappling hook sensation was relieved and the pillows stayed put by some adjusting of the lockbox and tweaking the wires.

Now, the lingering irritations - I awoke twice thinking I was in a rain forest (I've always wanted to go to Belize) - still getting the impromptu nasal irrigation and had gurgling/ swooshing noises in the nasal pillow part. Wading suggested a polar fleece wrap for that portion. Do I have to rip up an old jacket along with some old pantyhose now? Or should I just play an audiotape of howler monkeys and make the best of it? Note, there is not condensation anywhere else in the system, just at the pillows. Wading, how did you fix this? I live in Wisconsin - yes the room is cold. Everything is cold here except in August.

The Aura makes my hair look like I have a buzz cut. We all know how important appearance is with these things, right? (wink) I 'll just consider it a fashon statement.

My dog is still afraid of me, but came closer last night. I'll write that off to the fact that he is a golden retriever, not known for fearlessness. Or I'll try to convince him it is just a gladiator helmet like the kid next door has.

So, after some major adjustment, the only real complaint is the condensation in the nasal part of the tubing and the noise and nasal irrigation I get about twice a night. (on inhale, It sounds like a respirator - a really eerie feeling since I have spent a lot of time working with those). Oh, and I'm still wondering about disinfecting. I don't know if it is a problem or not if cleaning is limited to soapy water wash only.

If you have any fixes for these, I may be asking it to be my longterm partner!

Beth,

First may I just say, YIPPEE??? Okay. I feel better now. I'll continue.

Your post had me LOL'g. Very comical which must mean you are really getting some restorative sleep with the Aura. It is showing. As far as the tube goes, the pigtail part, I would go to a store like Walmart that has a material dept. for sewers and buy some fleece (don't rip up a jacket-donate it to charity) and just hand sew a little jacket for the hose. Or you can even hot glue some velcro on to the edge and make it removable so you can wash it from time to time. That would be my suggestion.

And, yes, when you have the money, like Wader recommended, buy the Aussie hose. It should eliminate rainout entirely. You maybe won't need the fleece tube covering after buying the heated hose. I don't use it as I rarely use my hh. But last night, I had to use Flonase as I felt a bit stuffy from allergies (which happens from time to time, although fortunately infrequently) and woke up feeling very dry on one side of my nose. I think I may invest in the Aussie, too. Hey, why not? I've purchased five masks since June. What's another purchase???

As far as your hair goes, in the front of my head, too, it flattens down the "poof" that I give it with a blow dryer. But all it takes it a little re-blowing in the AM and it's poofed up as good as new again. If you are a morning shower-er, you'll end up redoing it anyway. It's not permanent, thank goodness.

I am so happy you had a leakless and comfortable night with the Aura. This is why I swear by it. Keep it up!!!

I used the medium pillows last night and I really had to adjust everything to get it to work. Really could not tell from the large. Still had some leaks but nothing that really kept me up. I dod like the mask so I will continue to play with it. I would have to rate this interface with the Swift and Activa as the top three masks.

Thanks, Lori - your support and encouragement mean a lot. I really think this might work! So far I would rank it the same as R&R, right up there with the Swift, only I do think the Aura leaks less. And, fortunately, the flattened hair doesn't scare my dog! But what will they say at the fabric store when I ask for 1/20 of a yard of fleece to make a cozy for my cpap nose piece?

R&R,

Maybe you are one of the ones who may really need the XL's. Or, then again, you may just not have hit the exact adustment with the wire and position of the lockbox yet. You could always put the band around the nosepiece and you'd have the most perfect interface money can buy. That is a dream as you KNOW it won't leak. If it leaks with a band around the nosepiece, you definitely need to try the largest pillows.

The XL's are supposed to be out there, but this site has not advertised it as of yet. I will check again today. When I spoke to Claudia a week ago Thursday, she was going to get the owner to get in touch with Aeiomed and get them up on the site for sale. And if this site holds true, they will do it. So I'm going to go look for you and see if they're available yet.

Don't give up the ship. I truly believe in all the preaching I've done about the Aura. I wouldn't give this up for any other mask out there. I have found my baby!!!

Get your Yippee's ready - the Aura is fantastic! (er, at least it was last night). It worked, it worked, it worked. I dragged an old sweatshirt out of the rag bin an cut some pieces out. Wrapped up the short tube and then put a little blankie on the nasal part just above the loop. No nasal irrigation! The headgear slipped once but I think I just need to snug it up a tad in the back. Otherwise, stayed put, comfy, and little bother at all (which is all relative, of course). It's a keeper, and I'm officially submitting my request for membership in the "I Love my Aura" club. thanks to everyone for their suggestions and encouragement, especially Lori and Wading (for the interface cozy idea).

I suppose it goes without saying that for any club related to OSA and CPAP, we have all "paid our dues" well in advance? And I'll forgo a certificate on the wall for the aura on the bedpost. Thanks again, Lori!

Beth, no "thanks"!!! Thanks is reading that you benefitted from my over preaching about the Aura, in addition to other posters' positive comments about it, and you trusting all of our judgments and trying it.

I am so happy you are finding it as wonderful as I am. I couldn't imagine using any other interface for even one night, and I'm not even looking to find something better right now, even if it exists. To me, that is amazing.

I'm so happy for you, truly! No thanks are ever necessary as far as I'm concerned.

I keep trying to like mine but I have the past two nights been waking to leaks and it is due to the band slipping off the top of my head therefore breaking the seal. Any others with this problem? Any cures?

R&R,

Which "band" are you referring to, the one across the back of the head? I won't offer any suggestions yet until I find out the answer.

You KNOW that RG has fixes for every conceivable problem you can have with the Aura. The question is, are you willing to try them???

I think you are just not an out-of-the-box Aura lover, unfortunately, or maybe you just don't have it set right yet. And the last choice, maybe you really need the XL pillows. I wrote to customer service yesterday on this site to see if/when they will put them up for sale since they are available, according to Aeiomed. Will let you know when I find out.

Lori,

Only one band that I know of and it is the one on the top of the head. It just slides off.

I know of the rubber straps that aren't adjustable, the two side straps that are and the back strap. I'm not sitting with the Aura right now, but I can't think of a top strap. I have to go pull up a photo of the Aura and repost. Be right back...
