I'll just add my $0.02 here and say that Afrin and other vasoconstrictive nasal sprays are the very pinnacle of evil. When I was very, very young I suffered sinus problems, and the inept doctors told my parents to just let me use these products ad libitum. I wound up addicted to them for literally years. I eventually kicked them as I got older, but still didn't realize why doing so was desirable. Eventually, I wound up going to an OTO for nosebleeds. When he looked up my nose, I'll never forget his look of amazement. I'm not entirely sure what he saw, but it was definitely not what he was expecting, and was not at all good. I've had several cauteries since then, and finally a turbinoplasty. THAT procedure was the best thing I ever did for myself. For quite some time now, I have been anatomically incapable of being congested. It's heaven.

I honestly think having the turbinoplasty has been a great help getting used to CPAP. Nothing congests me, so neither does the machine. In fact, the humidifier actually seems to be good for my sinuses.

Afrin is nasty. Afrin is adictive.
When I really need it, I use Neo-synephrine.
Before you try Neo-synephrine try some steam. Get a tea pot and use a towel over your head to gather the steam. This actually works better than jumping in a hot shower and uses less water.
You can also try nasal irrigation. I begin irrigating when my sinuses act up from allergies, sinus infection, flu or anything where the sinuses swell up. I do not irrigate daily year round, only when needed.

Again Afrin is no good it's garbage.

Look guys, Afrin's like magic -- it works extremely well to eliminate congestion, but not without consequences. It's side effects are horrid enough, but the resulting rebound congestion from over-use is the pits to deal with. Friend of mine is still dealing with rebound from over-use in July and it's mid-Nov now; she sounds like she's got a cold most of the time...not good!

Now that said, I still use it when I am completely blocked from congestion. I have learned that I can use it the following way and not get cardiac effects or rebound. This gives me 5 nights of use, enough to see me thru the worst of a cold so far.
Night 1: 1 spray each nostril
Night 2: pick one nostril, 1 spray
Night 3: same nostril, 1 spray
Night 4: switch nostrils, 1 spray
Night 5: same nostril as Day 4, 1 spray
Then, no more Afrin (I use the 12-hr no-drip moisturizing generics) for several weeks at the very minimum.

i got prescribed fluticasone propionate and it do-sent work very well. last night i was stuffed up and i shot about 8 shots into each side and nothing ,sailene and still nothing .1 shot of afrin into each side and ive been good for 18 hours
