cpap whistling

Post by hanks beard » Thu Nov 19, 2009 3:54 pm

My cpap hoses make a high pitched whistling sound that is very irritating to my wife. I assume its the fit of the hoses and/or mask but cant seem to stop this sound. Any help?

Where on the hose?

Could also be a pinhole leak.

Well, I'd say that if you have cats, you might check your hose under the tap for tiny pinholes, because I imagine that could cause the noise.

Or teach your old hose a different song...

Please register (it's free) and then fill out your equipment profile, so we can get a better idea of what you are using.

I use a Swift LT mask (nasal pillows) and if my humidifier is turned up too high, and a drop of condensation collects on an exhaust vent hole, it will whistle.

I've heard my equipment whistle sometimes too--never can figure out why--My equip is fairly new so I shouldn't have any leaks or anything (no cats and the 2 dogs we have don't get near it) I figure it's either a leak somewhere or too much water --the water was easy to solve--just turned down the humidifier. leaks sometimes are more difficult to track down.

Whistling from a cpap hose is typically from the air vent holes on the mask when moisture gathers & partially blocks them.

Your problem may be from some other cause but moisture at the vent holes is a good starting point.
When this hapens to me I find all I need do is run my finger over the vent holes while all is in place & that seems to blow the moisture out & the air exiting reverts to its normal sound.

I hope this helps

xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)

I've had a whistle sound in the mask happen when there's moisture from rainout. It's a drag.
But since it was only a little moisture, I was able to fiddle with it while half asleep and get a better seal and stop the noise.

My humidifier whistles when it's not seated properly on the heating tank, and my mask can whistle from the air vent being blocked, but the hose ... if it's pushed all the way onto both the machine and the mask, it shouldn't make noise. I agree, there may be a small hole somewhere.

Many things will whistle when they are not seated tightly and vibrate. As someone above said, the vent cover is one that I have experienced and I am sure there are many other places that this can happen. If it is the vent cover, hold that down when the whistling happens and it will stop. Try to hold, one at a time as many places where there are joint like the elbow connections from small hoses to larger. I would not doubt as someone else said, that the hose might have a leak. You just have to pin it down. Could change hoses to eliminate that variable then investigate from there.

Check any valves or flapper valves for moisture. Some masks have anti asphyxiation valves in them and moisture can cause them to whistle at times too. Not all masks have these valves. It could also be a small pinhole or kink in the cushion of the mask. Also check the mask for cracks and the fittings for the hose and your machine.

Best of luck
Gerry

I found the longer hoses whistle more due to the resonate length and the air moving through is like a pipe organ, to cure mine I wrapped some foam insulation around the hose and secured it with tape. I discovered the fix when I routed the hose under my pillow and achieved the same result.
