Using cpap in Asia

Post by dtsm » Wed Nov 04, 2009 8:01 pm

What suggestions or preparations are needed when visiting HK and China? My brother is visiting for Christmas. Thanks for everyone's input.

So far I have not seen anything suggest that most machines are not capable of operation on 120/240V 50/60Hz. Usually there are two possible problems the adapter required to fit the plug into the local receptacle shape and possible single voltage for a power supply for a heated hose. Verify the power supply for the machine is "universal" and off he goes.

As mentioned, make sure you have an electrical plug adapter, you could possibly run into a couple of different varieties over there. If you're taking anything with you that won't run on 240 volts, you can buy a small power converter at Radio Shack or other electronics stores. Make sure to carry an extension cord so you can reach the power plug if it's not right next to the bed. A small travel power strip is a good idea. When I was there last year I could not locate distilled water so be prepared to use regular bottled water in the humidifier. Speaking of water, drink only bottled water, do NOT drink from the tap and don't rinse any of your equipment in tap water. Security at the airports is REALLY strict about anything containing water or alcohol so don't try to take anything like that with you. This includes the purell-style hand sanitizer so take some sanitizer wipes with you. You can also use those to wipe out the mask and humidifier tank if needed.

Thanks for the quick replies. I also consulted a friend who travels extensively with cpap and got the same suggestions.

Hopefully sometime by the end of this year I'll be trying to get back to my cpap treatment!

I live in mainland China and travel all over Asia. You won't need an adapter plug in China. The plugs here fit everything fine. It's just 220v/50hz everywhere. I have no problem's traveling. In fact if you tag your CPAP with a medical tag, you can board the planes first!
