Resscan Software Not Detecting Card Reader

Post by rbrown3rd » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:13 pm

I have read many of the posts and tried most of the tricks to get my Resscan software to detect my ACR38 card reader with no success. I have tried installing the software on a Vista PC with no success and on a WinXP with all updates with no success. I have tried installing the driver and USB interface that comes with the Resscan software and have tried it with the Windows default drivers. If anyone has any other suggestions to get this software to detect the card reader I would appreciate your suggestions. I am a pretty experienced computer person having worked in the field for about fifteen years but this thing has me stumped. Thanks for any help you can give.

I use the USB cable, but the only way my computer is able to interface with my blower is if I connect the blower and the computer with the cable while my computer is off. When I start my computer with the blower already attached, ResScan has no trouble finding my blower. You may have already tried that with your card-reader, but if not, I thought I'd throw the idea out there.

So are you using the ResMed-brand card reader, or are you trying to rig a regular card reader to work by using the Bolton credit-card method? I've never used the card reader, but I think I remember someone saying that it is counter-intuitive which side up that the card goes into the reader or something.

Here is the thread on making a guide for the card:

Please confirm that you are inserting the ResScan card in the reader with the CONTACT AREA FACING UPWARDS, before attempting to download data from the card.

Cheers,

Bill

I made that mistake , its odd to put the card in the machine one way and the reader the other way.Has nothing to do with me being computer illiterate.

Yes, I am inserting it with the contacts up. I read that in a post somewhere. What puzzles me is that I cannot get the software to detect the reader at all. Does it not see the reader unless the card is inserted? When I insert the card the light on the reader goes solid green for a bit then back to flashing.

ResScan will report various reader related issues unless a card with valid data on it is correctly inserted in the reader.

There is a utility available from ACS (the manufacturers of the card reader) which will confirm if the drivers are installed correctly in Windows.... I don't have the link handy but I've posted it here several time already, so a search should find it.

Are you using a Resmed branded ACR-38 card reader?

Cheers,

Bill

I am using an ACS ACR38 card reader. It is not a Resmed brand.

Card line up in the reader is crucial if you aren't using the Resmed branded reader with the moulded card guide.

Even a small mis-alignment can cause problems. While making you own card guide is not that difficult, it does require a degree of care in terms of getting a good, repeatable alignment of the card.

Cheers,

Bill

So the reader will not show up in the software unless the card is inserted and inserted exactly right?

Yes, that's pretty much it.

I have both a Resmed branded ACR-38-U and a standard ACS ACR-38-U. Having the Resmed branded reader alway allowed me to go back to a known good solution to double check what was happening when I had a problem with the ACS ACR-38-U in working out what I needed to do for a card guide.

I initially played around with just "eyeballing" the card location (that is just using black lines show wherethe card needed to aligned when inserted) but quickly discovered that this was not reliable enough, then I tried a one side only guide, and also found that was also not reliable enough for me...... hence the handy-dandy home-brew both-sides-now card guide approach that I ended up with. I experimented with pieces of card until I got the alignment repeatedly correct, and then made the plastic guide to exactly match the card template.

I did this before the ACS driver test utility was available... that would have made life somewhat easier.

Anyway, the two significant learnings from this whole process are that:
  • Alignment is important

Very occasionally the cards just do not get "written" correctly in the S8 (the solution is to reinsert them and get the S8 to write the data again)
Cheers,

Bill

And my experience has been that I never get a second chance. If I line the card up wrong and ResScan won't read it, then I have to close the program, reboot, and try again. I can't just keep scooching the card around until I get it right.

I made a Bolton guide from a credit card and it worked great, but I lost it. By then, I thought I could hit the target without it, and this worked for a while. But my sense of where to insert the card drifted and for a couple of weeks. I was tearing my hair out (to the extent that's still possible) with frustration until I found and marked the correct entry points.

I had the same problem and consider myself computer savy. I struggled several days and finally figured out that ACS and not Resmed made the reader. I am not sure by your original post if when you say you have all the updates you are referring to the card reader or to the operating system software - Windows Updates. For me, though I have the Resmed branded ACS Card Reader, it did not work until I updated the card reader drivers. The drivers that came with the reader did not work. Got the lastest drivers from: http://www.ACS.com.hk/index.php?pid=drivers&id=ACR38 Pick your flavor. Hope my first post helps.

Thanks everyone. The knowledge presented in this thread is absolutely perfect. It is what I needed. I will download the utility and will also make a card guide based on your posts elsewhere here. I thank you so very much as I would have probably lost what little hair I have left trying to make this thing work. Thank you very much.

Bob did you get it to work? What is the part number of your reader found on the bottom> I am having similar problems and have installed the latest ACS driver but my reader is part PN: ARC38C-SPC-R. I think it should be ARC38U-whatever.

No, I have not gotten it to work. I am very disappointed. I may have to buy the more expensive reader. The number on the bottom of my reader is ACR38C-SPC-R
