Rx for replacement mask

Post by dcroshaw » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:09 pm

I can see the need for a prescription in order to sell a cpap machine, since pressure settings must be set, but what is the point of requiring a prescription for a replacement mask order? Physicians usually do not specify particular mask features on their prescriptions. Anyone have an answer for this?

To drive the market price up? Job security?

If you are getting the same mask from the same vendor - they should have it on file. Get a copy if you want to go elsewhere.

Masks by definition are an interface for a class II medical device and thus is dispensed only by order of a physician according to the FDA. Also, even if this were not the case it is a way for insurance companies to only pay for medically necessary supplies. For DME companies the RX is actually a hinder to reimbursement as most states require annual RX renewals. No current RX means no pay.
