Fixing -- not preventing -- rainout?

Post by MoneyGal » Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:45 am

Last night I had my second-ever episode of rainout. I'm probably going to buy a heated hose to ensure this doesn't happen again, but what should I have done at that time to fix the rainout that had already occurred?

My brain was completely addled and I couldn't figure out what to do...so I lay awake for a few hours (and worked on some annuity calculations, lol).

Help?

Turn the humidifier down, or off.
Take as much of the hose as you can under the bed covers
Wrap the hose in a hose cover.

The first is the most important.

OK, I did most of those things last night (turned off humidifier, put hose under covers) -- but I still had water gurgling through the hose.

Should I have disconnected the hose and let the water fall out? Or what? I dumped my mask in the sink, but in that moment I couldn't figure out what else to do.

Also - I have a hose cover already.

Yes, of course. I didn't realize you hat it that bad.

A hose cover was never enough for me - I need a heated hose, hose cover, and narrow mask tube cover to avoid rainout.

i was having rainout all of a sudden because i was sleeping with the 10 foot hose to the machine and had to climb over the wife to get in bed and had it set on autostart and when i took it off in the morning, the pressure blowing through the hose was so much that it would blow in water in the second or two it too the machine to autostop. so i put it on and climb in manually now and throw the extra hose over the back of the headboard.

Whenever there is water in the hose - simply raise the hose higher than the machine with the air off and the machine lower the water should return to the chamber.

You do have your machine down below the level of your head? Preferably on the floor!!??

When rainout happens just back off the heat dial by half - so if it was on 3 turn back to 1.5. If it happens that 1.5 is not enuff moisture for you then increase by .5 to 2.0 - you know 3 is too much, right?

Along with the other things that Ozi mentioned this should tune you right in. Keep in mind - as the weather and the seasons change - so will these settings need to change. When turning on the furnace for the winter you may need to bump the dial up to compensate for the drier room air.

ALSO many don't realize that using air conditioners during the summer removes moisture from the air and make it tricky to balance your humidity.

The temperature in the room can also make a difference. The warmer the room is, the better.

Basically, if you have rain out in your tubing, you need to just raise the mask higher than the machine, and shake the tube to get all the water to go back down into the machine. After the majority of the liquid is drained off, turn off the humidity, and let the machine run for a few minutes before you put the mask back on. This drains off the most of the liquid, and air drys the rest.

Thanks all. I have my machine on the floor, and I did raise the hose...but not enough, I guess. I'm prepared for tonight though!

The heat went on in our house a few weeks ago and I did turn up the humidity. Now it's fine-tuning, eh?

So grateful to have you all here.

Let us know how the nite goes for you.

I had mine on passover for the summer and just recently started the heat at 1. As the winter gets here I will have to bring out the HC-150 cuz we ALL know now that the M-series humidifier just can't keep up or be pre-warmed.

Night went great! I was a little apprehensive going in but all was well. Thanks for asking!
